I wonder if  having a very "close friend" wasn't a normal way of life among  gentlemen of high society and royalty  in those years...

Most men of all classes and eras have "close male friends".  Sexuality has nothing to do with that. I imagine most women do as well.

Well stated Robert.

A preference for the comfort of male companionship does not imply sexual intimacy.

True but there are records on Serge's activities and feminism I did read...With Ernie that was the testimony of Ducky..."No boy is safe in the house...he slept quite openly with all of them..." I don't think that imply male bonding... ;)

OTOH Ducky might have had an axe to grind?

Yes...but judging from the letters Ducky wrote to Missy. She did not seem to be a liar. In fact she was often blamed too honest. I guess like Kyrill later on when she did found out about Ernie, she was really in shock. Even though she told Grand Duke Serge ( in a letter) that Ernie wanted her to go on in name only, she flatly refused to live a lie.  :(

Whatever Serge was I don't think he could have been called a feminist.  ;D ;D ;D ( I don't think he was particularly effeminate either, as he always had a rather sinister manner in order to hide his true feelings in public).

However there is not a shred of evidence that he was heterosexual, and I would be interested if Svetabel could provide some from the new book!

Back to Ernie - there was a very heated thread (it got locked) about two years ago on the Hesse-Darmstadt pages about his sexuality. The Ducky quote ("stable boys") was one that Missy's daughter  Ilana reported in an interview her aunt had told her, to console her for finding herself in a similar situation (engaged to a gay man - hope I've got this right!). The participants were unable to provide any other evidence. However, Greg King, who was supposed to be producing a book on Ernie (where is it?) stated that there was indeed lots of evidence, holidays in Capri etc., but declined to give any details........ :-\

I'm personally inclined to believe that Ernie was quite a bit further down the Kinsey scale than Serge (whereas Felix was right up there at 9 or 10!). :)

I don't think so. Ernie was the sensative boy in the family and love arts and design. Ring a bell ? Also I happen to visit the archievs and saw some very narssistical shots of Ernie. I know further evidence is needed to bring him as gay/ biosexual, but the tell tale signs seemed to be there. I have no reason to doubt Ducky's word on this...Maybe Greg King's book will shed more light on that.  ???

I guess Eric meant Sergey's manners sometimes looked strange for other people.

I'd like to share some thoughts about new Russian bio on GD Sergey but not on this thread. :)

Indeed ! that is what I meant. I heard Sergy's friends are strange too from what I have heard.  :-\

Looking forward to hearing some of your thoughts on Serge. Which thread will you put it on ?  ???
