Yes the thread here is that Ella would have understood had Ernie (most likely) been gay...

It is about that, and yet we have dragged this thread into many speculations about Alexandra, although that is how threads go.. ;D

Well, she had a different persepective than say, Ella had. It was perhaps unrealistic, but if it was, then it is understandable because of her position. Ella, in her position could see life more on a realistic level perhaps..but we don't know that.

Ella and VMH had to grow up pretty fast after Alice's death. It gave them a maturity that Alicky lacked. The younger sister was spoiled and lived in her own narrow world ( not even a good hostess in her native Darmstadt).  :(

I think they did grow up faster. But, Alexandra had a childhood that perhaps wasn't easy, loosing her mother so young, although she was close to Queen Victoria. She wasn't as bad a hostess in Darmstadt as Victoria Melita later got the reputation of being, for instance. She was never that social tough, there or in Russia. That is a factor.

Alicky was spared the running of the household while VMH and Ella divided the chores. After Irene left and Alicky became first lady, she was stiff and unwelcoming even in Darmstadt. This is a woman that was destined to be Empress of the Russian Empire. Ella was one of the few that got through to both Ernie and Alicky.

Ella was better in public and more able to empathize with people, and make the good parts of her character come across than Alexandra could. Ella was private, she kept herself to herself, but she wasn't shy. Alexandra was great in private, but was chronically shy. That became a immense difficulty for her in Russia. But anyway, this isn't the Ella and Alexandra thread.. ;)

All I initially wondered was how, if at all, did Ella reconcile being a woman of such great faith, with the acceptance of her brother (and now I guess the gay men she knew), when homosexuality was not only viewed as a crime, but a sin by the church that she was so devoted to. It's very unusual, even today, to find devout people so accepting.

Right, it was viewed as sin by the church she was devoted to. I think that's a great point to make. She was unusually understanding for that era, and for her personality, and her religion. But, then, perhaps she was just realistic as well. It was going to be, perhaps you should accept it?

I think she also took in a lot of emotional baggage with Sergei, maybe after him the other cases are not so earth-shattering after all.  :)

I suppose the same way that KR, who was one of the most devout members of the Romanov family, reconciled his sexual preference.

He did struggle. I don't think Ella did though, or at least she didn't struggle personally which makes it less of a struggle. Perhaps after Sergei, nothing was earth shattering, but I think she was just an understanding person as well. Sergei perhaps made her more that way.
