Award Brooch
« on: September 16, 2006, 06:51:59 PM »
I was browsing on Ebay and stumbled across a person selling a Nicholas II award brooch that belonged to Boris III of Bulgaria. I'm very curious to know if it's a fake or indeed real. Does anyone know how to determine if the markings of the jewelry company are authentic or if there is any other way to visibly tell that it's real? I'd appreciate any help.

It is a total and complete fake meant to decieve. Pretty much all of these Bulgarian "award" items are faked. Not even good fakes at that.

It is obvious that the box was not made for the brooch. If Nikolai II had presented it, the box would have born his cypher not that of the future Bulgarian king.

I looked at another it that this dealer has for sale, the 'ritual egg cup' which is really a charka with an incongruous base married onto it. The 'Russian" snuf box looks Geman or Dutch made with a large Moscow hallmark on the bottom that I have onlt seen stamped on large pieces of silver. The suppossed Russian cross is not Russian made, nor does it bear a Russian crown.

Beware!

Thank you very much for your informative replies. I came very close to buying it and it is at times like these when I am extremely grateful to belong to this site. I could never get a better authority on this subject. I should have known better really--my dad warned me about jewelry from Eastern Europe....I'm quite disappointed that it's not real, but at the same time glad to have saved $5,000 dollars. Again, thank you very much for the help!

Ortino,

You must be EXTREMELY careful and skeptical about "Faberge" or "Imperial presentation" items on ebay. 99% at least of all such purported items for sale there are fake, either totally fake as is the case for dealers in New York, and Pennsylvania or common genuinely antique items which they "dress up" to look to be Imperial presentation, when in fact the quality is so poor they never would have been given by the Tsar.

There is only one piece of genuine Faberge for sale currently on ebay that I have seen, and is being offered by a reputable dealer.  If you wish some references to reputable sellers, PM or email me and I will gladly provide them.

Ortino,

the website kfaberge.com has a section of photos of many of the fakes on ebay (it has a wide range from the ridiculous to the less obvious forgeries). Perhaps this would be of interest.

Thank you very much rgt9w! It was a most interesting and highly informative site. After having gone through the entire thing, I then proceeded to Ebay to test it out. I was amazed at how much more easily I could pick out the fake aspects of the items, whether it was the stone, quality, and/or designs. I would love to report this seller to Ebay for selling fake items and ultimately robbing people of their money, but I don't know how seriously they would take my claim considering that I'm not an expert.  :-\
