An old thread on GD Dmitriy Konstantinovich  is closed and not available --- let’s start a new one. I had posted some pics of the Grand Duke in that closed thread so let me post again :)

Here with his brother KD Konstantin

Svetabel! Many, many thanks for the super photographs and painting! Having looked through the IF threads it appears that you are without question, wonderfully generous with your time, knowledge and resources. There are so many of us in your debt!

I noticed that on the Konstantinovitchi thread you mentioned that Mitia was very supportive of Tatiana K's marriage. He sounds like such a good man, like KR really.

Did Mitia have any private dealings with Nikolai Konstantinovich, after the latter was banished to Tashkent. NK sounds like such a black sheep, but like KR such a good man at heart. Both men seem to have been ruled by their hearts a great deal, was Mitia the same?

Mitia was certainly very suave. He wore clothes with such panache and natural style and the cigarette holder adds to his glamour. I was suprised to see that he shaved off his beard and moustache in later years.

So I know he lived at Strelna during and after KR's lifetime, but did he have his own palace within the grounds, like a bachelour pad, or did he have apartments within the Konstantine Palace itself during KR's lifetime? Also I note that Mitia bought a house in St Petersburg in 1915, so does that mean that Mavra, Ioann Konstantinovich and KR's other children inherited Pavlovsk and the Marble Palace in SP as their homes?

Does anyone know if Mitia ever contemplated marriage. He seems to have been very fond of KR's children. Did he have a good relationship with his parents and sisters?

I am sorry to ask so many questions, but I do find Mitia so interesting! I would like to know so much about him and his interests, but there seems so little in books or on the internet, except here!!

Really, so many questions! ;)

Actually I've not read about GD Dmitriy K. private deals with his brother GD Nikolay K. NK was indeed a black sheep in the family and seemed only GD KR was able to  assosiate with him with patience. Of course GD Dmitriy was good at heart but h ewas under influence of his mother GD Alexandra who did not forgive (at least publicly) her eldest son.

As for his houses and palaces if I remember correctly he had appartments in the Marble palace, then he owned Strelna and in 1912 bought an estate in the Crimea (you can see some pics of his crimean palace Kichkine on the thread about the Crimea estates of the Romanovs).
He never married and seemed never tried to find a fiancee, but he adored his mother, brother Konstantin (KR) , sister Olga (Queen of Greece) and was like a second afther to KR's children -- GD Gavriil (his nephew) mentioned GD Dmitriy in his memoirs with warmth and gratitude.

Oh, and surely GD Dmitriy ad a great rage for horses!!! He owned 2 horse-breeding farms - one was situated in Strelna and another
in Dubrovka (Poltavskaya government, the Ukraine now).Dmitriy was the president and atron of more than  30 societies concerned to horses and horse-breeding. In 1897-1905 he was Chief supervisor of the State Horse-breeding farms.

He was very religiuos, quiet and modest man, and a close friend of GD Petr Nikolaevich, btw.

Many thanks for all the info Svetabel!

Mitia sounds like such a good man! I knew there had to be a reason why I am so interested in him.

I shall look into his interests in horses too!

It's nice to think that Mitia and Petia were close too!

I have just discovered the transcript of A.A.Mossolov's memoirs 'At the Court of the last Tsar' which has a very good entry about Mitia, whom one gathers, the author liked very much! His dignity and good heart are evident in his actions!

I can't believe a Grand Duke could ever be so shy! He was so modest! It is amazing to compare him to some of the other members of the IF.

If you refer to her 2nd marriage, he was more than supportive--he arranged it. With all the turmoil going on and with TK being widowed with 2 small children, he arranged for an aide to marry her so that she wouldn't be alone and would have male support. It's almost as if he sensed what might come and that TK would be left without male support.  :(

He seems to have had very interesting views on the role of Grand Dukes too! He was so fair mindede and democratic in his outlook.

I really admire him for his ability to see the bigger picture!

In the tread on The Counts of Carlow, there was mentioned also GD Dimitri as being "a woman hater". Woman hater, like he didn't like to be in woman company at all or he had bad experience with some femile person?

I think he didn't much like the company of women though he was very good to many of his female relations--especially his niece Tatiana K.

That's like this. He was under strong influence of his mother GDss Alexandra, he loved her much and saw his father broke Alexandra's heart having a lover and children from that lover. Moreover his eldest brother GD Nikolay K. got tangled into a very dirty and mysterious robbery becouse of a woman, who had turned Nikolay's head completely. And probably GDss Alexandra ( devastated by the scandal around her eldest son )
instilled into Dmitriy's mind that many women were just man-eaters. That did not mean that Dmitriy rushed away from any woman but he definitely looked shy on them and trusted only those who were his afmily circle.

Yes, you are right. All of this happening in his family it must have left a deep impact on him! :(
