Maybe some of you genealogy buffs can help me.  I have heard that one of these daughters of James V married into the Hume family of Wedderburn. Can anyone confirm this?  Perhaps it may have been a child or grandchild of one of the daughters, but I think it was supposed to be a daughter herself.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Prince Christopher. For all the illegitimate children James had, there is a surprising paucity of grand children! I have yet to find any children from the daughters of James V. There is a very tenuous link between the Hume family, the Gray family and Robert Stewart in that an ancestor of the Humes shares the surname of Gray and a daughter of Robert Stewart married a Gray. That might be one big red herring though.Sorry I cannot be more help but Bell the Cat is very hot on this subject so maybe he can find a link.

One of James V's descendants caused a lot of trouble for his grandson James VI:

Earl Patrick of Orkney the son of James V's son Robert practically had free rein to do as he liked in the islands of Orkney and Shetland, and was very unpopular there on account of his oppressive ways. He built a new castle at Birsa in Orkney where he had inscribed the name and descent of his father thus:

Robertus Stuartus, Filius Jacobi Quinti, Rex Scotorum, hoc edificium instruxit.

Unfortunately the correct Latin would have been "Regis Scotorum" which would have meant that Robert had been the son of the King of Scots. The way it was written implied that Robert had actually been King! It was a major grammatical blunder, which resulted in his being executed for treason in Edinburgh (Feb 1614)!

Your second James is the son of Christine Barclay.  I'm still seeking the mothers of the second Robert and Margaret.  And I have found two different Elizabeth Stuarts listed (i.e. different parents) which makes me wonder if there was indeed a Helen Stuart and and Elizabeth Stewart.  If so I always find Adam with the Helen, but have found Margaret mentioned with Elizabeth.  As to the question of how die Marie de Guise feels about the mistresses.  Check the date of birth for the illigitmate children, most are before Marie's wedding in 1538.  Apparently James did not want to make a firm decision to marry, but enjoyed the field first.

Christine Barclay gave him James in 1528
Elizabeth Shaw  gave him James the Commentor of Melrose & Kelson in 1529
Margaret Erskine gave him James the 1st Earl of Moray in 1531 (not to be confused with his uncle the James the Earl of Moray)
Euphemia Elphinstone gave him Robert the Earl of Orkney in 1533
Elizabeth Carmichael gave him John Lord of Darnley
Elizabeth Bethune gave him Jean the Countess of Argyll in 1538
Elizabeth Stuart gave him Adam the Prior of Charterhouse of Perth in 1538
The birth dates for the last two, Robert the Prior of Whithorn and Margaret both are given as pre 1530.  So it would appear that James the V was out having a good time before he got married and when his first wife died he went on a grief bender again.  But the only children concieved after his marriage to Marie appear to be Marie's.
So maybe she just forgave his past and try to be the queen she was.

But given the male domination of the period, ie even the law said the rule had to pass through the male heirs, I can see why some of the illegitimate kids might take offense thier little sister, who never saw her father rule, take over as the Queen of Scotland.

Diana was a 6 time successor to Mary ,  Queen of Scotland, France and England.

That was a reason why Diana has a smilar character  to  Mary.

Most mysterious, enigmatic Stuart was Baron Friedrich Stuart. (I think he was a Charles II bastard grandgrandson)
Baron Friedrich Stuart was married to Henriette Kant, niece of Immanuel Kant.

Baron Friedrich Stuart was an ancestor to Count Eric Stenbock, Oscar Wilde friend .

Thanks for this interesting info. And how was Diana related to Mary of Scotland?

Diana has many lines of descent from royalty. She descends from some of the natural children of King Charles II and King James II, sons of Charles I, King of England. Some of these lines of descent are from her paternal grandfather, the 7th Earl Spencer while the other lines are from his wife, Lady Cynthia Hamilton. As well as being a descendant of Kings of England, Diana can claim descent from the Kings of Aragon, Cyprus, France, Jerusalem, Portugal, Scotland; the Holy Roman Emperors; the Dukes of Bavaria; the Dukes of Savoy; and a variety of other sovereigns.

Hi Miller 99!

I sort of agree with you about similarities between the characters of Diana, Princess of Wales and Mary Queen of Scots ( great personal charm - terrible taste in men), but I can't believe this is due to heredity. After all the majority of the English aristocracy has several lines of descent from Mary, largely (as you say) through the illegitimate offspring of Charles and James.

I'd be interested to hear why you think their characters are similar!
