Romanovs and the Media

In the present times, the life and personal details of royals are registered in magazines and tabloids. But, how it worked with the royals families in the 1900's, especially with the Imperial Family? Were the Czar and his children the targets of "paparazzi" and other media attention like articles about them in magazines and newspapers? If they were, was only in Russia that this occurred or were they faces pretty much known all around the world?

I don't think the paparazzi existed back then as it does now.  There was no mass communications, no fast way for reporters to get around.  So I don't think OTMA had the paparazzi following them around like Princess Diana did.

That's OTMA not OTMAA... ha, ha but close! I don't think Nicholas would allow it! I mean press wasn't "free" back then if i remember correctly and any flier or press that like spoke out against the Tsar could give you a one way ticket to Siberia or worse! But that's only if i remember it correctly!

Its like banned books, they were still there (essentially rag mags,) but they were circulated in private homes/private circles. Ever seen Romanovy:VS where they start burning down the factory and they get even madder when they see the crude drawings of Rasputin and Alix? Like that.

Of course there wasn't the same paparazzi as we know today, but they were definitely some of the most well-known individuals. Besides the incredibly ridiculous tales of marriages and travels of the elder Grand Duchesses in later years, reporters sent out articles in the New York Times notifying the public of events such as Anastasia's bout with diptheria, Alix and Tatiana receiving ambulances for the hospital, each of the children's births and christianings, the hospital work of the Romanov women, etc.

They probably were also very known in other countries in Europe, considering that there were postcards of the Imperial Family sold in countries like Germany and France.

Yes, I'm sure there were . . . before the war, when the czar and the kaiser were friends, Willi probably wanted news on his relatives. Maybe - but I'm perfectly willing to be corrected!

Oh, no problem! Also - did the videos have sound? Like, if there was a crowd yelling would it be heard? I know that it wouldn't when they were talking, but when there were really loud noises . . .
