I just got 'Der Kronprinz', which is in Hungarian(it really is an Hungarian movie), and it is historically one of the most correct I've ever seen. We see Elisabeth's struggle to give Rudolf a liberal education, we see the events that lead to Mayerling, the aftermath, Mary's burial and that of Rudolf. It really is great, and for once the acotrs really resemble the characters. My Hungarian friend is working on subtitles, so when I have these I will see to put it into a torrent.

Quite accurate in historical terms. Made in 70's in BBC soundstage with secenes shot at some of the grand Heritage homes in England as foreign palaces.

You mean 'Fall of Eagles'? I adore that series, the acting might be not as good as today's standard but still it is a wonderful series.

This docudrama is filmed at the actual places and gives a historical correct image of the Empress Elisabeth.

Sissi, L'Imperatrice Rebelle:

Days before her assassination Empress Elisabeth visits doctor Mayer and tells him the story of her life. She tells him about her early marriage, her strugle for her children and the relationship with her husband and mother-in-law. She tells him about her fight for Hungary and her love of traveling; but she also tells about the tragedy in her life. She talks about her cousin Ludwig, her brother-in-law Maximilian, her sister Sophie and about her son Rudolf and his end with Mary Vetsera. We also see Elisabeth in her final days untill she is chosen by fate to die at the hands of Luigi Lucheni.

This movie has several little mistakes, but overall it is historically good. Yet there is a big dramatisation in this(for instance Elisabeth finds Rudolf and Mary at Mayerling), the actors did not resemble their characters and they did not film at the actual locations. The whole movie was shot in Russia. It is wonderfully filmed though and has wonderful costumes.

Kronprinz Rudolfs Letzte Liebe:

Kronprinz Rudolfs Letzte liebe tells the story of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary and his last mistress Mary Vetsera.

The movie starts with the funeral of Crown Prince Rudolf and then moves on to Heiligenkreuz, the graveyard where Mary Vetsera is buried, there we see the grieving mother who is confronted by a visit of the Empress. Mary's mother tells about Mary's burial and how she was found. Then we go in flashback to octber of 1888. Back to the night when Rudolf and Mary first met...

This movie also shows a good portrayal of Rudolf, who is a depressed and sad man. He finds courage and the will to live in his love for Mary. Yet it is not meant to be.

Royal Ballet - Mayerling:

This is a ballet based on the events surrounding the tragedy fo Mayerling.

The ballet starts with Mary Vetsera's burial and then moves on to 1881, back to the wedding of Rudolf and Stephanie. After the ballet we see how Rudolf is being pushed to choose for Hungary's freedom. At the wedding-night it becomes clear how different Rudolf and Stephanie are. Then we move to 1888. Rudolf and Mary meet at a tavern and Mary is taken by his charm. Countess Marie Larisch finds a way to bring the two together and so the tragedy unfolds.

What I liked was that they used several little things know to historians and how every actor resembled the real person. Also I liked the quote from Mary near the end and the information you get on the aftermath and how everyone involved lived after it.

The world will never know what really happened at Mayerling, the Imperial Hunting Lodge of Crown Prince Rudolf. We were told it was a romantic tragedy but this movie portrays it quite different.

When the movie begins the tragedy has already happened. We witness the burial of Mary Vetsera and see the funeral procession held for the Crown Prince. Soon we go back in time and we witness the depressed Crown Prince falling in love with the young Mary Vetsera. As the end comes near we are told that the tragedy was no suicide-pact but a political assassination.

The movie is in French, without subtitles.
