Amalia Felipe del Pilar Infanta of Spain was the youngest child of Francisco Duque de Cadiz, Infant of Spain (1794-1865) and his first wife Luisa Princess of Bourbon-Two Siciles (1804-1844). She was born on October 12th 1834 in Madrid ans died on August 27th 1905 in Munich. Amalia married Adalbert Prince of Bavaria (1828-1875) on the 70th birthday of her father-in-law Ludwig I. of Bavaria.

The couple had 5 children:
- Ludwig Ferdinand (1859-1949) married Maria de la Paz Infanta of Spain (1862-1946)
- Alfons (1862-1933)
- Maria Isabella (1863-1924)
- Elvira (1868-1943)
- Clara Eugenia (1874-1941)

Adalbert and his wife Amalia in 1864.

Maria de la Paz Juana Amelia Adalberta Francisca de Paula Juana Bautista Isabel Francisca de Asis Infanta of Spain was the seventh  daughter of Queen Isabella II. (1830-1904) and Francisco Infant of Spain (1822-1902). She was born on June 23rd 1862 in Madrid and died on December 4th 1946 in Schloß Nymphenburg. She married Ludwig Ferdinand Prince of Bavaria (1859-1949) on April 2nd 1883 in Madrid.

The couple had 3 children:
Ferdinand Maria (1884-1958) married to Infanta Maria Teresa (1882-1912)
Adalbert Alfons (1886-1970)
Maria del Pilar (1891-1987) ... I think she was named after her mothers sister who died very young.

Ludwig Ferdinand, Paz and their children.

Maria Theresa Isabel Eugenia Patricinio Diega Infanta of Spain was the second daughter of King Alfons XII. (1857-1885) and his second wife Maria Christina Archduchess of Austria (1858-1929). She was born on November 12th 1882 in Madrid and died there on September 23rd 1912. Maria Teresa married Ferdinand Prince of Bavaria (1884-1958) on January 12th 1906 in Madrid. Ferdinand renounced his rights to the Bavarian throne and was given the title "Infant of Spain" in 1914.

The couple had 4 children:
-  Luís Alfonso (1906-1983)
- José Eugenio Alfonso (1909-1966)
- Maria de las Mercedes (1911-1953)
- Maria del Pilar (1912-1918)

The children were born as Princess / Prince of Bavaria. Later they were given the title "Infanta / Infant of Spain". Does anybody know if they had both titels then?

Why did Ferdinand of Bavaria give up his Bavarian title for the Spanish one?

Do I remember correctly in thinking his mother was an Infanta as well?

Did Paz leave memoirs?  If so, does anyone know the title?

I have Aus meinem Leben - Eindrücke von Paz which was published by Georg Müller Verlag in 1917. This is a very small book, but nicely written.

Paz was also the author of Spanische Künstler-Mappe.

You are right, Prince Christopher. Prince Ferdinand's mother was Maria de la Paz Infanta of Spain, a younger sister of King Alfonso XII.

It was the wish of the royal family of Spain that Prince Ferdinand settled down with his family in Spain. He was created Infant of Spain and had to join the Spanish army. But don't ask me why ... When Ludwig III. became King of Bavaria in 1913 he wanted Ferdinand to decide whether he wanted to belong to the Bavarian or the Spanish royal family. Although his wife Maria Teresa had already been dead in 1913, Ferdinand refused to come back to Bavaria.

Maria del Pilar (1891-1987) ... I think she was named after her mothers sister who died very young.

Yes, Infanta Paz herself tells about the subject of her daughter's name in her memoirs: "I told my husband, somewhat timidly, that I would like to call her Pilar, but was afraid the name might be too Spanish for a Bavarian princess. He only asked me if it would really give me particular pleasure, and when I said “yes” he at once consented. It seemed to me as if in that name my sister had come back again."

Can you post a picture of Pss. Pilar ?
She was a devoted painter and died in her 90s.
