Need ID - On Postal-Telegraph Official
« on: September 24, 2006, 07:11:10 PM »
Hi,

Can someone tell me if this is a postal department guard or a telegraph
department guard ?

If he is not a postal guard or telegraph guard what kind of civil servant
was he ?

Here is a closeup of the badge on his cap.

When do you think that this photo was taken ?

Thank you,
Mack

The guy on the photo is not a full-time guard, but a regular postman dressed for guard duty. While accompanying mail during its long-distance transportation, or when on guard duty at postal agencies, postmen were armed with dragoon-type swords and with revolvers normally issued to infantry sergeant-majors.

You may see an almost similar postman uniform (with a slightly different cap) on a Russian postcard, ca 1910:

Hi Mike,

That is a great postcard thank you very much.

I see that  his uniform is dark green but is the piping on
his cap and uniform pale green or pale blue, or what color
was it ?

And how about the buttons and badges were they
silver colored metal or gold colored metal ?

Thank you,
Mack

The uniform color at that time was black, with dark blue piping and white buttons and other metal accessories. On the postcard the piping was apparently done light blue for better contrast.

Hello Mike,

Thank you Mike for the correct color descriptions.

Forum member ded posted me the links above to the
website with drawings, is there a website somewhere
that has real photographs of Imperial Russian postal and
telegraph civil servants ?

Also do you know of any websites with photos and details
about Imperial Russian municipal police or gendarmes ?

Thank you,
Mack

I know of no such dedicated site. However, if you wish to wait for about a week, I'm going to upload to the Fandorin site my collection of police and gendarme images. Here are three that are already there:

Left to right: quarter inspector; municipal policemen in winter and summer uniforms.
