Picture of Anastasia smoking?

Hi, it's my very first post, so I apologice if this is mentioned somewhere ... it was in Italy, 1990 I think, that Elle magazine had some photos of the GDs and I remember one of Anastasia taken in a palace garden while smoking a sigarette! Do you have idea where I could find it?

There are other threads about this, but remember, at that time people who DIDN'T smoke were more unusual than people who did. Check out some old movies & TV shows sometime -- for most of the 20th century, the majority of people did smoke.

I think that picture is funny too. And she probably was a pro at it by then.  I don't think it's very unusual for them to be smoking, since it was common at the time and Nicholas was a chain-smoker.

I agree. People back then DID smoke. Even women. And it was not unusual to see a publicity where a woman was shown smoking in a public area. There were this kind of publicity, kind of "Toulouse-Lautrec French affiche". I have some old Argentine Magazines from 1898 to 1919 and they has this kind of publicity showing women smoking. I should like to post them here, but I haven't got any public webspace to do so. If anyone could give me her/his adress to send them the pictures  for they could post them here inestead of me it should be O.K!

Ya, even until about the late 60's, before the health effects were really known, smoking was very common. But, now we think of it (most of us) as a dirty habit, and it is, but we just didn't know it yet.

Of course they did!  What do you think the Opium War was about?  Granted, I don't believe OTMA would have used any of them, unless a doctor perscribed it.  I'm not sure if they would've been able to grow marajuana there anyway, but since I am not familiar with any narcotics, I don't know for sure.

Yes of course they had marajuana back then. I read somewhere that Nicholas or Alexandra used opium.. does anyone know if that's true or not?

Opium was used quite a bit and I believe by some members of the IF in the form of laudanum --
which was a very popular and common cure-all for everything from headaches to monthly cramps, etc.

I know that they used injections of arsenic also -- specifically Olga was receiving them when she was nursing and feeling "green" as I recall.

My great grandmother smoked marajuana back in the 20s, so they had it around then.

Drugs were seen differently, too. Nicholas did smoke opium, I don't know about Alexandra. But he also used cocaine. It helped him with his headaches he'd had since someone tried to assassinate him in Japan.
