I'm pretty sure OTMA didn't roll their own cigarettes. Nicholas gave them to them.

Maybe they shared the cigarette because they didn't have many. I don't think they had pot in that part of the world, it's just a North and South American thing, but it could be shipped over there. A lot of people today would be surprised to find out that not only was smoking common and accepted back then, most drugs that are illegal today weren't then. It's said that the founding fathers of the US, including Washington and Jefferson, not only smoked pot but grew their own. It is supposed to be what was in the Native Americans' peace pipe. Marijuana was not made illegal in the US until the late 1930's after the movie 'reefer madness' caused an uproar.

Cocaine was legal, too, and yes, Coca Cola got its name because when it began in the 1880's it had a little cocaine in it. I saw a quote from Nicholas's diary once about cocaine, saying something like 'this is good stuff, everyone should use a little every day' :o So perhaps some of his bad judgement was drug induced. Not judging them though.

That's funny because I know OTMA drank Coca Cola! So I guess they had some cocaine at one point.  ;D
Who knows about Nicholas and Alexandra. I've heard all kinds of things about them but I don't know if any of it is true.

i was reading a book don't know if the titles right but royals and russia or royals of russia something close to that but the picture of OTMA laying in the hay with Nastya having a ciggar (is that spelled right) in her hand and tha caption said Anastasia rolled up a piece of paper and pretending to smoke. I don't like it when books get things so wrong especially biographies on television...but they only get pictures wrong sometimes.

Haha! Suddenly history makes a lot more sense to me. World War One was probably just the end result of some really bad opium trip :P. I should use this as my thesis in a few years when I'm a grad student! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get too far with that though....seems a little unrealistic :P.

In terms of this topic, I'm mildly surprised Anastasia was smoking, but then again, not really. I read an entry in a letter once from Tatiana to Nicholas thanking him for a ciggarette that he gave her. So I'm guessing he was their main provider, and the GD's would have smoked together as a casual social thing.

gd_42-----I don't know what was Alexandra's react.
And, how to tell, it is very unsure was Alexei smoking or not. But cigarettes weren't intense or wasteful, I am sure.
We don't know what is in his mouth:

Alix smoked herself when she was stressed. If she didn't mind the girls doing it I doubt she would've cared if Alexei did it as well.

Nena, I've always been told that was in fact, not Alexei. Maybe Sarushka could clear this up.

Att: nena:     Re: the identity of the photo of the young man "smoking", Sarushka has previously addressed her opinion of his identity on Reply #25, Post of July 22, 2007 under the topic "Smoking" / Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich.  ( First sentence  reading:  "That is definitely Aleksei.", and her subsequent observations relative to the identification.)   Best regards, AP.

In that picture, Alexei is not really smoking. He is imitating the bad behaviour of the guards at Tsarskoe during their captivity.

Here is a picture I found yesterday of Anastasia smoking, through a site I found courtesy of Joanna.  It's hard to tell from this grainy shot, but it looks like she may be drawing on a cigarette held by Olga?

Also, it looks like this picture was taken on the Children's Island in Alexander Park, or on the other side of the canal from if that is indeed the Alexander Palace visible through the trees at right.

That's correct. It was taken by Maria in the spring of 1917.
