White Crow (GD Nicholas Mikhailovich)
« on: October 14, 2006, 07:34:00 PM »
Has anybody read the book, White Crow, The Life and Times of the GD Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov, 1859-1919, by Jamie H. Cockfield? I thought it was quite interesting, learning more about "uncle Bimbo", although at times I thought the author was a bit harsh in his views on the Romanov family and the book had some errors.

I have the book and have read it a few years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I do not understand however, why it commands such a high price these days.

I must gleefully agree with Margarita...the boo is wonderful...even if it is so expensive...I think it is money well spent.  Our hobby is not a cheap one and one just has to get over it.

The book was not commercially published, hence the cost reflected on the price.

It had better be good- I just bought it ! I kept hesitating, not so much because of the price, but not many reviews or opinions about it were about.I finally met  someone who basically shared Arturo's opinion so took the plunge, so to speak.

It will be a while before I get to it- I am in London until mid-December and I had it sent to SF to avoid hauling it back there. However, I will put it on top of the stack- over the Paul I volumes.

The book was published by a small scholarly house - and prices for such books are higher.  Moreover, the book was published in a limited edition.

Thanks all for your replies. :)
It is a good book, and I was impressed by the sources used in the book. I didn't know much about it, and as Robert-Hall wrote there are not many reviews or opinions about the book (or I havn't seen them!).
I am lucky that I can borrow almost all the books that I want to read thru my library (and inter-librarian loans), which is very helpfull when you are a student with no money! How much does "White Crow" cost, just out of curiousity? :)

Is this book mainly about politics?

No...not really...I felt it was well balanced between his personal & political interests.

Thanks! It is quite expencive, and once again I thank my library!
And yes, the book dealt with politics and WWI, but it also covered the Grand Dukes life in generel (start to finish), with many of his personel letters to friends and family.

I finally read this book through interlibrary loan, and actually feel it is one of the better books on the Romanovs, especially the lesser known members. I had never read it before because I wasn't sure if I could get it via interlibrary loan and and I also wasn't sure how interesting it might be.It does cover a lot of politics, but it isn't written in a boring way in the least. It also covers a lot of the private life of the Grand Duke and his family and gives a good portrait of the Mikhailovitchi branch of the Romanovs.I got the impression from the book the scholar who wrote was very interested in the life of the Grand Duke, an impression you do not always recieve from scholarly books, which can be very academic at times.Actually, although published more as a scholarly work than a work of popular history, this book is very readable, compelling, and interesting.I highly recomend it! It's too bad it doesn't get more attenion!
