Joyaux des Tsars
« on: October 07, 2006, 04:52:08 PM »
I heard Pce Michel of Greece on the radio this afternoon. He came to tell about his last book Les Joyaux des Tsars and sounded very interesting. I rushed to Galignani bookshop where I was sure I would find it and had a look. It is a coffee table book on the Romanov jewels from Catherine the Great to Nicholas II. It contains some gorgeous pics of even more gorgeous jewels as well as lovely portraits & pics of members of the family carrying them (some of them well known but also utterly new to me - esp. portraits). This book will definitely be on my birthday list !
I do not know whether the book has been translated & published in English but if not yet will probably be as are all of Pce Michel's books. It can be found on amazon.fr.

There's an English version called Jewels of the Tsars. Anyone interested can preorder it from Amazon.

Yes, how different indeed, unless he has access to unpublished collections. The standard work on this subject has been "Joyaux du Tresor de Russie" (Paris: La Bibliotheque des Arts. 1990), the best catalog of the Diamond Fund.

Prince Michael and I discussed the book on Thursday.  I am eagerly awaiting my review copy to land on my doorstep.

I have back and forth with Amazon a couple of times now, and the new estimated shipping date they have provided is October of 2007.  They are proving hard to pin down as to whether they are just giving themselves a huge window or if they are really serious.  Unfortunately, the price that they are charging is the one I can afford to pay, so that will pretty much rule out getting it before they are good and ready to ship.   :( :'(
