how does one make a parure function as a tiara?  i'm sure that it is more than just turning it over and whacking it on one's head.  how do they make it stand up?

actually, a 'parure' is a set of jewelry that specifically go together; such as a tiara, necklace, earrings & bracelets; or, as in the case of my last post (the 5th one up from this one), it's a parure comprised of a tiara, necklace & brooch.    but i'd forgotten that....

and when a necklace is used as a tiara, it's attached to a wire framework.   sometimes the frame is made at the same time as the necklace, but other times it's made later, when someone wants to make the jewel more functional.

also, a necklace can be adapted for use as a tiara and/or a tiara can be adapted for use as a necklace.

i hope this helps?

I have completely missed this topic and unfortunately come to it late.  I'm pretty sure that the Torby ruby and diamond tiara was included in an exhibition that was held at Wartski some years ago in aid of the Samaritans.
I have to say that it isn't one of my favourites; there is just something about the design that isn't aesthetically very pleasing.  The jewel is composed of indidvidual elements that can be detached and worn as brooches, hair ornaments etc.  I sort of feel that the design has no flow and doesn't really feel unified, although obviously it is a versatile piece of jewellery, making the best use of the jewels that are incorporated.  As rubies are so very rare, it is unusual to find stones that have the impressive dimensions of sapphires and emeralds; as such this tiara definitley feesl less than Romanov interms of splendour and design.

Barbara Hutton owned a tiara that contained emeralds that once belonged to Catherine the Great (she may have received them from Empress Elizabeth). The tiara could be converted into a necklace as well. The stones were removed from the tiara and given to her seventh husband. It is presumed that he sold the emeralds. There is a famous black and white portrait of Barbara wearing the tiara by Cecil Beaton.

This link shows the Beaton portrait (note the site describes them as the Vladimir Emeralds):

Here is a link with a pic of her wearing it as a necklace:
