"The Endless Steppe"
« on: November 18, 2006, 04:59:08 PM »
I was cleaning up after school one day and I look into one of the garbage cans. In it I find several hardcover books, among them this. It is by Esther somebody and is about a Polish 10-year-old being taken from her home to someplace in Siberia. It is based on the author's own experience. Could anybody tell me more about this book? It's in pretty good condition.

Yes, it's full title is 'The Endless Steppe ~ Siberian Exile' or, in some editions 'Growing up in Siberia', by Esther Hautzig (real name Esther Rudomin). It is used a lot in schools as it is a strong, true story of 'survival against the odds' etc. Esther lived for the first ten years of her life in Vilna, Poland, but in 1941, following the Russian occupation of the area, she was taken with her mother, grandmother and many others to work in a gypsum mine in Siberia. The book tells the story of the next five years, as she struggles to keep her family together and survive the dreadful arctic winters. It has been printed many times, in hard-back and paper-back, with a variety of pictures on the cover, and has been translated into several languages. I think it first appeared in the 1960's. In schools it is often a reader for mid-adolescents, who can relate to Esther and her troubles. A well-known book ~ I am sorry to hear it was in the garbage ! I hope you rescued it!!

Yes, I guess I did save it. I finished it last night. Apparently published in 1968. That's probably why it's in such good condition. It's quite a good book and I recommend it to just about anyone, but probably people 12+ will relate to it a bit better.

Its great to see that this book is still around.  Its one that I used to re-read when I was younger.  As said earlier it is a great story of survival.  It really puts life in perspective for an adolescent reader.

Aww, I remember this book! I read it over and over again when I was in middle school.

It's been a while since I read it, so I'm a little confused about something that happened in the book. Why were they taken to Siberia, exactly? It was probably somewhere in the book, but I don't have my copy handy.

I discovered this book in the 5th grade (a million years ago!!  ;D ) and I still have it in my collection.  It left that much of an impression on me.
