Reason I was thinking it be a photograph, is the position of some of the people, looking directly at the 'painter/photographer' while FJ is speaking........that is strange to me.
I do believe there are photo's of the Empress in later life, but in Family Archives, specially in Hungary and not for 'our' eyes.

I still doubt that there are photos of her taken in old age by her wish (at considering that she stopped having them at her 30's when she was still young and beautiful), even if they only would belong to her family, she had her ideas about that issue. Anyways, if they exist I hope that one day we can know them  ;)

[I think with all the black dresses, it's nearly impossible to say which one she wore that day for sure. Another mystery to add to the Empress' life. ;-)

This is totally true, she wore black for her last nine years, so an specific one wouldn't make a great difference...

Totally agree with you, Yelena. Photos for family would have been to risky because sooner or later, some photos might have got lost and reach the public. But the point was not that she was afraid someone could see her. She simply didn't WANT to see herself on a photo from the age of 30 on. She was most beautiful around that age and she knew from that point on, things would get worse again. It would have felt for her like watching her beauty disappear AND having proof of it in a photo. If I remember correctly, there is a quote from Elisabeth in a book where she says something like that.

But I think they knew which dress she wore...even though it was black.

The court officials. Those in charge of propaganda. Sisi was very popular even though she "retired" from public view after the death of Rudolf.

The court officials, yes, that's right.

They were also the ones who "aged" Sisi's early photos to suggest a later session. I don't know if that was what Sisi looked like at that age.

There is a picture of an aged Empress Elisabeth in the boolk L'impératrice anarchistem by C. Clément.
It is quite surprising that the picture isn't better known.

Yes, that one! It was taken, it says, around Christmas 1891. I wonder who owns that picture and if there are any more...

Aren't you talking about this? Because in this case none of them is Empress Sissi but two of her ladies in waiting as Madame Sissi once discovered. The only one, really showing her aged that comes to my mind is the one of her at Terriet with a lady in waiting (1898)

Yes, that is the picture that I am talking about. So, who are the women? And do you know where is that post from Madame Sissi?
