Well, I’m not an expert, but I am an enthusiast with some knowledge! From the bustle-y bit and slight leg-o-mutton sleeves it appears to be 1889-1891. It looks like watered silk at a first glance, but perhaps that’s just the glass. It’s interesting to see the glittery trim, as Elisabeth was dressing in such muted ways at that point, yet if this was worn to Marie-Valerie’s engagement-wedding, if there was anyone Sisi would have dressed up for, it would have been her closest daughter. Pity the dress is displayed so oddly, but it does show off the train nicely. Does anyone know what museum it is at?
Thank you very much for your opinion Andrea! I know that you're very acquainted with topics about fashion and I trust in your opinion. IMO it looks suitable -elegant- for a very important event as MV's wedding, you've confirmed me that is likely that it comes from that time. I found interesting that this is the first dress of her mourning years that isn't as muted as the majority of her other mourning dresses, but well, for MV she would do everything to make her happy. I must say that I still have some doubts about the color, perhaps the time has faded it or it is just the photo. I'd like to see the frontal part of the dress, sadly this is the first and last time I've seen any photo of this beautiful dress, I don't know where is it, although I think that it must be in some Austrian museum.
PS. The dress that Sissi wore for MV's engagement is this, it was also mentioned that she wore it for FJ's birthday too. For the date, one of her last non mourning dresses, still with a light color.
its this dress for marie valeries engagement and FJ's birthday:
