This made me to think about one thing: anyone knows how many times she renewed the clothes of her wardrobe? Also what she did with the "old" clothes, perhaps if she gave all them to her ladies in waiting. Well, I knew that she wasn't one of those ladies who wore her clothes/shoes just once (am I wrong?). I'm sure that she left several dresses at the time of her death, sadly not much survived until our time, at seeing that many of the items available are just replicas. Many must have damaged or were lost, I wouldn't be surprised at all at considering that two World Wars happened then and many things "disappeared".
Glad you liked it Jen, I must say that this is one of my favorite dresses of her. The real gown surely looked a lot like this beautiful replica!  :)

I think in the end only the black dresses survived in her closet at the time of her death. The gray dress she wore for Valarie's wedding was an exception...

Yes, many of the real dresses -not replicas- that still exist are mainly of the mourning years -here I've seen 4 or 5, and also her very well known last dress-. Is a pity that the black dress that she wore at the Hungarian Millenium celebration (1896) isn't available today, not minding that is one of the last dresses that she wore, and also considering that she wore it for a very important event. I wonder if the famous light gray dress still exist? Here only was posted a pinkish dress that Sissi wore for MV's engagement but not for the wedding. Here, was posted time ago a photo of one grayish dress but I can't assure when she really wore it.

I think that might be it. Don't believe Sisi owned too many colored dress bt that time.

I was thinking about this. I see it grayish -very light gray- but I'm not totally sure about the color because for me it isn't totally clear. Perhaps some fashion expert can tell if this dress can be from 1890.

It looks like an evening dress no doubt by design.

Well, I’m not an expert, but I am an enthusiast with some knowledge! From the bustle-y bit and slight leg-o-mutton sleeves it appears to be 1889-1891. It looks like watered silk at a first glance, but perhaps that’s just the glass. It’s interesting to see the glittery trim, as Elisabeth was dressing in such muted ways at that point, yet if this was worn to Marie-Valerie’s engagement-wedding, if there was anyone Sisi would have dressed up for, it would have been her closest daughter. Pity the dress is displayed so oddly, but it does show off the train nicely. Does anyone know what museum it is at?

Thank you very much for your opinion Andrea! I know that you're very acquainted with topics about fashion and I trust in your opinion. IMO it looks suitable -elegant- for a very important event as MV's wedding, you've confirmed me that is likely that it comes from that time. I found interesting that this is the first dress of her mourning years that isn't as muted as the majority of her other mourning dresses, but well, for MV she would do everything to make her happy. I must say that I still have some doubts about the color, perhaps the time has faded it or it is just  the photo. I'd like to see the frontal part of the dress, sadly this is the first and last time I've seen any photo of this beautiful dress, I don't know where is it, although I think that it must be in some Austrian museum.

PS. The dress that Sissi wore for MV's engagement is this, it was also mentioned that she wore it for FJ's birthday too. For the date, one of her last non mourning dresses, still with a light color.
its this dress for marie valeries engagement and FJ's birthday:

That is a very lovely dress too. She looked good in both black and white.

I am honored.  :)

It is a great pity that no images of Elisabeth exist in those two beautiful creamy gowns, for I am certain that she looked far more lovely in those then in the drab black customary for her at that time.

When was Marie-Valerie's engagement?

You're totally right, they got engaged at the Christmas of 1888, on Sissi's birthday too. Sad to think that not much time after (a bit more than a month) Crown Prince Rudolph died, starting with Sissi's endless mourning  :(

I agree totally with you! For the weddings of Gisela and Rudolph -in this last case there is even a sketch about his engagement with future Crown Princess Stephanie exists- I've seen a pair of sketches that include Sissi, but I haven't seen none about MV's wedding or engagement. A photo is even more unlikely. I think that she would have looked great, mainly with that elegant light gray dress!
