Alexander = Alexei (?)

In the film "Rasputin" with Alan Rickman, Sir Ian McKellen and others, Nicky says that Alexei will be "Alexander" as Emperor (in the German version, I don't know whether it is also in the English one).
I've heard that Alexei is a variation of Alexander, but there is one Tsar named Alexei (1645-1676) and there are three Alexanders - so, is it a mistake in the film?

Alexei is Alexei. Alexander is Alexander. Two different, yet similar names. Think of Jonathon and John as a similar example in English.

I don't remember hearing that in my English version. What part of the movie does it happen in your version?

Very good movie. Alan Rickman was perfectly cast. Anyway, maybe the German version didn't have a name very close to "Alexei," so they chose Alexander.

That's right! In the German version Nicky says: "Vielleicht wird unser nächster Zar Alexander der Schreckliche genannt werden!" (or very similiar)
