How did Alix come up with the name Alexandra Feodorovna when she converted to Othodoxy?  Specifically, how is the patronymic name derived?

I think that the patronymic name Feodorovna derived from St. Fyodor, an Orthodox Saint...but I'm not sure... :-\

So the names are not dictated by any protocol, they're just picked by choice?

Fiodor is Russian name. And the first Romanov was crowned in front of icon of St. Fiodor. (Not sure for the name of icon). It became one tradition -- for foreigner Princess to take new patronymic -- Feodorovna. (I noticed some exceptions as well)

Sadly, I have no one relevant source to prove this.

I also believe there is a connection with the Fedorovskaia Icon of the Theotokos Mary, which has a connection with the Romanov family.

But not all the princesses were given this patronymic..... For example Maria Alexandrovna or Elizaveta Alexeievna...?

Agered. According to this site:

http://pokrov.gatchina.ru/ikona/feodor.htm

Празднество чудотворному образу Пресв. Богородицы Феодоровская установлено в память провозглашения в 1613 году в сей день на царство Михаила Феодоровича из рода Романовых.
----------------------------

Festival miraculous image of the Blessed one. Virgin Mary established in memory of the proclamation in 1613 to this very day the Empire of Michael Feodorovich of the Romanov.
-----------------------------

Icon from Kostroma can be seen.

But not all the princesses were given this patronymic..... For example Maria Alexandrovna or Elizaveta Alexeievna...?
Yes. That is why I had said -- 'I noticed some exceptions as well'

Wiki:

The Princess of Baden learned Russian, converted to the Orthodox Church, took the title of Grand Duchess of Russia and traded the name Louise Maria Auguste for Elizabeth Alexeievna.
------------------

How interesting. Maybe she took he patronymic at her own wish? I doubt.

One of the family members told me that St. Feodor was the saint of the Romanov family. (I wanted to say patron saint, but I don't know if there are patron saints in Orthodoxy or not). In terms of Russian names they chose a first name close to the woman's own name - so Alix became Alexandra. Patronymics were another matter, but the most traditional was Feodorovna.

Sure its been answered but where the father's name didn't translate easily into Russian it became traditional for the bride to take the patronmic of feodor because of the historic and religious connection with the Romanov family. Hence Alix (father Ludwig) and Maria (Dagmar) (father Christian)
