I was raised on things like Hitchcock thrillers, the Marx Brothers, The Thin Man, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Are You Being Served, Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, Monty Python, etc. Kids my age have no idea what they're missing

I've seen some of those shows, Allison.  The British know how to make good comedies.

After that, another docu on Billy the Kid. Our favourite  US outlaw

One legend is that he wasn't killed in 1881, that Pat Garrett helped him escape (they were old friends) provided Billy clean up his act.  Billy did, and lived to be 91 years old.  In the late 1940's, an old man came forward, claiming he was Billy The Kid, and he seemed to know a lot of things the Kid would have known (sound familiar).

They want to do DNA tests on the person buried in the Kid's grave, but the state of New Mexico won't let them.

Sounds like the past popular moves called Young Guns and Young Guns II.  They start with Brushy Bill coming out of the desert to talk to a reporter.  Brushy Bill claims to be Billy the Kid.

There are so many different stories about the survival of outlaws and other historical figures.  The anti-hero is big business in the US.

Robert - of course because I canceled History, they now have some interesting shows!  O frere!

Not just comedies, Tim,  BBC especially  produces  brilliant  dramas.
And, I had read about that guy who claims to be Billy.  I wonder why NM would not allow a DNA test ?
Jesse James is another US folk hero/outlaw.  I do not know much about his story though.

Like Fall of Eagles! Love it, especially Charles Kay and Gayle Hunnicut as Nicholas and Alexandra. Kay is small and slight as Nicholas was, but had brown eyes ... did they not have cosmetic contact lenses in 1974 when this was made? And Gayle Hunnicut is my favorite screen Alix!

Re Post # 152 and as to why the State of New Mexico, USA, does not really desire a DNA test to be done on the remains of the so-called "Billy the Kid":  My understanding, Robert, is that it would significantly impact the drawing of tourists (read "revenue"!) to the subject's grave-site, museum/s, sale of commemorative souvenirs, et al., if it was proven that the remains were NOT those of "Billy the Kid."
Thus they seemingly ascribe to the maxim:  "A bird in the hand........"      Regards,  AP.

I do not know about  the  cosmetic contacts, perhaps the producer just figured it such a minor detail,  no one would notice ? I know they had them   then and way before, as they were used in  old Hollywood musicals.
AP, I am sure you are right in your assessment of NM reasons.  I have never been to Billy's grave site and had no idea it is a tourist attraction. Or, if I had been, I would have been very young and do not remember it.

A few years ago there was a DNA test done of the remains of Jesse James.  They proved on the maternal side that the man in the grave is Jesse even though there is a man who looks very much like him and has claimed for years to be a descendant.

On another front.  In the movie Night at the Museum II - The Smithsonian General Custer can't remember Sacagawea's name or how to pronounce it.

He calls her everything even Cinco de Mayo, but just can't get it right.

So until New Mexico relents, the mystery of Billy The Kid will continue.  If it's not the Kid in that grave, then who it is?

Could be  one of the other pals in the gang, I suppose ?
I did not know about the Jesse James DNA thing.  Surprising, as I have a friend here in SF who practically worships the guy. He has a massive collection  about him, including even one of his  [supposed] guns.
Just never been interested in  the Wild West stuff.  I have too much in the way of other interests
Last night, HI channel had 2 hours  on Ben Franklin. That was also quite interesting,  but  most of his varied life was spent in Europe.

Grrr Argh!  You see what I mean?  I put up with repeats of all the trash on History and now that I cancelled it, they are putting on good shows again.

At the risk of going 'way off topic, I will add two further comments on "The Kid" and Jesse James:   1.) "The Kid " (or whoever) is actually in a three person grave, allegedly between two of his cohorts.  The (later) tombstone bears the usual information on the three and the word "Pals" at the top.  "Wikipedia" has a reasonable account of his existence.   2.)  In addition to the positive DNA on Jesse James, there are preburial PHOTOS of him, really leaving little doubt, IMO.  Regards,  AP.

Thanks, AP, I did read the Wiki entry. And, just out of curiosity [this is still history, not so off topic]   I read a bit about Jesse as well.  The friend I mentioned  calls himself "Quantril" online but I never never knew the provenance of that name until now. It would be interesting to know if these so-called legends reached the European  media, such as it was.
And, since we are generally talking about TV, has anyone been watching HOT IN CLEVELAND  ? A sort or re-working of GOLDEN GIRLS, . Betty White is the only survivor of that old series.  She sure has changed character in the new  one.

Quantrill's Raiders?

Kansas Civil War.  The James Gang rode with him.

Robert, Robert - American History is an interesting subject!  That is why I study 1860 through 1918 pretty much World Wide.  So much happened in that time period.

Betty White is riding high on being old.  I guess that is not so bad.

I remember her from The Mary Tyler Moore Show but I never watched The Golden Girls.  Its that laugh track thing I have.  My son, though, loved the show and now owns all of it on DVD.

I won't watch the new show because it is only a vehicle for Betty in her own  "golden years" - plus a wise cracking senior doesn't do anything for me.

But, Robert, when you are a senior and still "cracking wise" I will love it.  But that is a long way off yet.   :-)
