I am not a big fan of PBS.  It lacks diversity and has constant pledge breaks.  Also, with all their "sponsors" it has almost as many ads as a commercial station. I prefer the British [original]  version of Antiques Roadshow.

history channel's favourite thing to do is to get things wrong,
i turned it on the other day and it was showing charles and camilla and said "here comes william's mother and step father" it was like the biggest mistake its possible to make

Geez, what kind of morons do they have working there.

Yes, even for History Channel, that faux pas is  rather outstanding.

Last night I caught a new Masterpiece Mystery called "Sherlock".  They have moved Holmes and Watson to the 21st century.  In the often repeated words of the "host" it is a "fast, funny and modern take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original"

And Robert is so right.  They were pledging and even though they promised only one pledge break, it was a 15 minute one!

Did I like the "new take on Holmes"?  I am still not sure.  Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock is like Holmes on speed.  He doesn't smoke (how politically correct) but puts on nicotine patches when he thinks about the crime.

Martin Freeman is Dr. Watson just back from Afghanistan with a "psychosomatic" war wound and post traumatic stress disorder.  He is an unemployed doctor (is there ever such a thing?) who moves in with Holmes to save rent.

Alixz, if that is the episode I am thinking of, I saw at least some of it on my recent Euro visit. I did not care for it.  Rather sloppy I thought. And, I have no problem updating the story, it has been done many times. But, Holmes with nicotine patches ?  Really, that was NOT his problem with dependency. If anything,  tobacco would be the lesser of 2 evils for him.
And Watson a de-frocked  doctor ? If I recall correctly, there was an issue  with the doctor's medical career,  but  it is a stretch to put it in the Afghan  situation. IMO.
I admit  loving British mysteries, anything by Agatha Christie plus SPOOKS,  MIDSOMMER MURDERS, JONATHON CREEK, et al.
Most of the do not get to the USA,  Tim may know about  what gets  shown in Canada.. So far, it seems he sees the same junque we do.

Aloha all!

I've just been enjoying (via Netflix) the serial program - "Downton Abbey" - kind of like an updated "Upstairs/Downstairs".

Some really wonderful actors in it (I haven't seen Elizabeth McGovern for years!) and the location is absolutely spectacular as well.

I think this was originally shown on PBS since it has Laura Linney introducing it each time as a "Masterpiece Classic" - just a great piece of TV!

The location is spectacular - what an amazing estate!!

Sorry, as this is rather off topic for the History Channel - this certainly wouldn't be shown there - I'd be far more likely to see truck drivers, loggers or crab fishermen there!  Oh, and I couldn't believe it, but some channel (either the History Channel or TLC, which is even worse) have some shows coming up about a truck shop somewhere in the midwest and "Hillbilly Handfishing" - now THAT is truly the strangest thing I've seen a commercial for yet - and that is saying something!!!

Steven Moffat produces that.  He's the same guy who now produces Doctor Who.

Interesting thing I saw on a rerun of Two And A Half Men, from a few years ago.  Charlie has just made some comments about Germany invading Poland.

Alan:  You're been watching the History Channel again.

Charlie:  It's Nazi week.

Alan:  It's always Nazi week.

I guess this was when it was still "the Hitler Channel".  Makes one almost wish for those days back, now that they're desired audience seems to be beer drinking mullet heads.

As it should be.  The beer drinking mullet heads can live without Ice Road Morons for one weekend.

We haven't had "History" for about three months since I dropped the next tier of channels from my cable lineup.  I have already forgotten about it.  I find all of my history needs elsewhere.

Other than WW 2 and now the 9/11 inundation, HI has had some very good  history [ancient] documentaries. Especially Greece & Egypt. I stop at conspiracy theories from outer space, however. BORING !

I do not tend to watch  History Channel [except the International version] but will, from time to time,  see my partner watching either those LV pawn guys  or the scavengers [pickers].  He is in the business, after all and they do provide some good information.  After being involved with that business for 40 + years, and living with it in our home, I am bored with it.
I have  become interested in HGTV, especially the design shows and International Property Search, as I am always looking for  a property in Europe. The problem there is,.  my preference is England and the searches they show are usually people LEAVING the country, not moving to it. Odd, it is the opposite for Scotland.

Actually, I like Pawn Stars and the Pickers - I just don't necessarily think they belong on History Channel.
