Why not, BFG ? They are talking about the history of the objects, after all.  They are not selling anything except those annoying commercials which are everywhere. [everytime that woman falls down and "can't get up" I wish it WAS the end of her and turn the sound off] Where would you put then ?

I remember a joke on that particular commercial.  It showed a horse that had fallen and he kept saying, "Help, I've fallen and I can't giddy up!"

I would probably put Pawn Stars on Spike TV or another "guy" channel ... American Pickers I might leave on History. Your have a point about how they are talking about the history of the objects ... BTW, they now have Picker Sisters on Lifetime.

OK, BFG, although I am not familiar with those channels, I can see your point. As I said before, I really do not watch either of them very often, so it really makes no difference to me where they are.
 Even  my favourite- History International gets boring. I wish they would start new programming. I have seen so many Freemason conspiracy shows I can recall the things backwards.

Yeah, Pawn Stars, Ice Road Truckers, and Ax Men belong on this channel, not History.

Why not History,  Tim? I can understand the others, but the Pawn Shop fellows are informative and do provide the provenance of the items. They are surely not eye candy and that Chumley, well, the less said the better, IMO. I do not know know the other shows mentioned, just not my style.

I had no idea,  Alixz.  Did you know that Chumley is also the name of a a cartoon  figure ?
  Austin is not so bad, really.  Nice city. Even though it is in Texas. I had a friend once, named Butte [Montana].  How she handled that was cute.

The three Pawn Stars were on Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Chumley said that his name was Austin and that the Chumley came from that cartoon figure.  By the way, they were playing for charity and they did very badly.  They didn't know many of the answers and then blew the whole thing.  The ended up with the guaranteed $10,000 for their charity.

It they truly know the provenance of their items, they certainly aren't trivia buffs.

I don't know much about the cartoon figure as I have never seen it.  I have never been to Austin, TX either.

Butte, Montana!  Some parents just have to be questioned when it comes to the wisdom of the names they give their children.

 I think that is where she was born.  She just changed the spelling to "Beaut".  [she was one, actually].  I was born in Great Falls,  can you imagine going through life with that ? [I did not, BTW].
Early this morning, say 3AM,  I still had the TV on, fell asleep and the HI channel [or whatever it was] was still repeating 9/11  stories,  In between that lady who falls and the endless insurance commercials. Although cute, I am getting tired of the bubblehead.  I do not even drive, but I would use her company  unless they  produced some new, progressive commercials [pun intended]. I guess this is all universal, I see much the same on British TV, other than the BBC.
 Television seems an addictive, mind numbing medium, I think.  Look at how people  get attached to soaps, sports  games,  trivia and all around junk.  Something interesting comes along, and it is a rare treat.

My brother-in-law, who was born in 1951, is Austin - when he was growing up it was considered an unusual and distinctive name. Now it has become popular and my two teenage sons know boatloads of kids named Austin. I think girls' names tend to be more faddish, though. My parents, who are in their 80s shake their heads and wonder how these little girls will feel with strange names like Madison when they grow up ... they don't seem to realize that Betty, Helen, Dorothy and the like are just as strange now as Madison would have been in the 30s and 40s.

Madison is not so bad, I rather like it actually. I do not know any, but other names in my address book come up with strange long gone political connotations are indeed bizarre. I know what your mother means, ,  why name your baby "Zig Zag" What can the kid do with that [don't ask] Dallas is also popular I think. And I have one friend  named El Paso. He goes by Freddie. Not much room room to move with El Paso either. Another friend named her baby "Chalawanka". I have no idea where that comes from  but it sounds like Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavour.  BTW, this is not an ethnic moniker in any way. I do not even recall if this child was a boy or girl.
  Of course we all get knick names , especially in school,  and kids can be cruel as well as kind in giving them. Now, I think they come up with them from TV influence. Cultural statement.....

There was a joke once about a softball coach who is talking to his team of 8 year old girls.  Britney, Tiffany, Madison, Brittany, Tiffany, Tiffany, Madison, oh and Taylor, Taylor... etc.

My mom's name is Isabell (spelled just like that) and she has hated it all her life.  She was named after an aunt who died at age 17 in the early 1900's.  Now Isabelle and Isabella are very popular.  I do hate though to hear some young mother call for "Bella!" (thanks to Vampire Diaries and Disney's Beauty and the Beast) in the store.  I think she means "Stella!" (ala Stanley Kawolski) or she is looking for some very old and pudgy Italian woman.

My mom never had a nickname because she discouraged all who tired.  Only one neighbor called her "Bell" and that kind of stuck for a while.

My mother's name was Oleeta Jane. Where Oleeta came from, I have no idea.  Her sisters were  equally labled "Norma Jean, Willa Dean} etc.  So not much  shocks  me when it comes to my generation and after.  Especially the hippie names "Moon Beam, Peaches,  Aubergine," et al. I actually like the sound of Aubergine, but name your child after an eggplant ? Courgette is another pretty name, but then, a  zucchini ? One friend I had was named "carrot". Real name,  he was a red head  but I did not quite see the connection. He just went by Carey. Some of my nick names, either self given or bestowed on me, I will not repeat here, but not any of them came from TV. When I was a kid, Daniel [Boone] and Davey [Crockett] were popular.  Those are  easy to deal with.

At one time, my older son's elementary school class had three Samanthas, two Roberts, a boy whose first name was Baker (actually it was his middle name, his dad was William Baker also) and a boy whose last name was Baker. The girls finally settled on going by Sam, Sami and Samantha. Another class had three Rachels and two Claires.
