And you know when someone with the screen name "Historyfan" doesn't watch the "History" channel they're doing something wrong :-)

I watched a rerun recently of something pretty decent they did a few years ago. Forget the exact title but it was a history of the Middle Ages.

I stopped getting the channel. I cut back on my cable because it wasn't worth the extra money to get shows that I couldn't stomach any way.

Ancient Aliens seems to get their material from science fiction franchises.  I already pointed out Star Trek, but when they start on Egyptian stuff, the Stargate shows come to mind here.

Tim - Have you ever read Chariots of the Gods by Erich Von Daniken?  It was published in 1968. It pre dates most of the Sci Fi movies and TV shows. Except Star Trek which debuted in 1967. However since books take a long time to research, write and publish, I would imagine that Van Daniken was working on it long before Roddenberry got started.

And remember that many of the Star Trek episodes were written by long time science fiction writers many of whom started in the 1950s. Roddenberry produced the show, but the stories were written by published sci fi authors.

Much of "Ancient Aliens" was already discussed by Von Daniken long before Star Trek or Star Gate. I would think that the authors of the movies and the other TV series that deal with alien technology and origins took their material from Von Daniken.

I did, many, many years ago.  They've actually had this guy on Ancient Aliens.  However, I thought his ideas were debunked years ago.

Two episodes come to mind here, Arena (where Kirk fights the Gorn) and Wolf In The Fold (the Jack the Ripper episodes).  Both were adapted from short stories (in the case of Wolf, Robert Bloch adapted his own story, Yours Truly, Jack The Ripper).

Strange how none of the later Trek shows had any authors write for them.  Why not?  Stephen King wrote an X-Files episode, after all.

I don't know about Von Daniken being "debunked" but all I meant was that his theories about alien astronauts are not that far removed from the movie plots that you were mentioning.

The Egyptians and the Maya.

I just think that the script writers already read his book or something like it and took their inspiration from that.  The theories were already around but it took a new generation of script writers to take them improve on them and get them on the big screen.

By the way, my favorite Sci Fi movie of all time is The Day The Earth Stood Still.  My favorite Twilight Zone To Serve Man.

I looked into doing just that. Unfortunately, it's part of our "basic package". So it takes up space on the tv guide, but at least I'm not wasting extra money to have it. I'd do without tv altogether, but on that issue I am strongly and loudly opposed by a margin of 4:1. sigh.

I was going to say...you can't just drop the History Channel. It has to be part of your basic package. I watch less and less TV anymore. Really if I wasn't a sports fan I could go a few days without turning it on.

As I said, Ancient Aliens should be on SyFy, not History.

They use the broadest definition of "history" possible. Technically history is anything and everything. Doesn't matter if it's the Roman Empire, the Romanov dynasty, the investigating of ancient aliens, or the sentence I just type a moment ago.

Actually, our History, SciFi, Discovery etc are NOT part of our basic package.

Our basic package consists of the major channels out of New York rebroadcast on our local outlets. NY2, we get on CT3. NY4, we get on CT30 etc.

We get NY7 on both 7 and CT8, they must think we like that station. We get a lot of odd stations like Bounce TV which is usually old movies that no wants to watch. Not classics just 70s 80s 90s stuff that bombed at the box office.

We do get several PBS stations and I love that. We get 13 out of NY, 13 for kids (which I don't have any more) CPTV and CPTV4U all of which carry the public broadcasts. Some are duplicates, but some are great programing. I've been watching Garrow's Law and the new Upstairs Downstairs. They also gave us Downton Abby. History Detectives is usually interesting and at its best it is very good.

But after that we get a lot of Spanish Programing (no offence to our Spanish speaking members or anyone else, but I don't speak it well enough to watch TV in it) so I manually delete all of those.

But then we get the political channels for both the Federal and State government and watching them work is such a snooze. I don't how they stay awake!

And religious channels? We must get 6 or more and while the Evangelists must love it, those get manually deleted as well.

Of course we get all of the Shopping Channels - some of them on more than one channel number.

Basically (pun intended) we get appox 5 commercial channels, 4 PBS and that is about all I watch. Other than that TV is shut off and I read a good book. (I am no sports fan and thankfully neither are my husband or son. Yay. But I do have friends both male and female who live, sleep and eat sports and talk incessantly about football. One of my friends just posted on Face Book that she "was gonna get herself some Gronk" one weekend when the season began. She is a confirmed New England Patriots fan.)

That's right - the use of the word "ancient" qualifies. Nice loophole.

I'm ancient.   Maybe the History Channel would be interested in my life story.  It wouldn't be much worse than most of the programming on tv nowadays.
