I think it may have just been a fad she adopted that one spring/summer. Some how the messy ponytails suited her, IMO. ;-) My guess would be that her long hair got in the way so she grabbed a ribbon, tied the ponytail herself, and continued with whatever game, prank, or other hijinx she was engaged in. I think it was meant to be utilitarian and not a fashion statement.

It's interesting, because the ponytail was so clearly a transitional style for the Big Pair when they were 14-15 and too young to put their hair fully up. Judging by the photo-record, it sure doesn't seem like the Little Pair did the same.

Something else I've noticed about OTMA's hair! Maria is seen wearing her hair up in 1914, on the Standart. We know it wasn't after 1914, because that was the year of the last cruise. Yet Maria didn't turn 16 until 1915. Maybe Alix wasn't as strict about those things as we thought.  ;)

I've never been able to figure that out either. Here's one:

I remember it being mentioned in a book I read years ago (I can’t remember which one) that Alexandra allowed her to begin wearing her hair up a year early in 1914. Why she did this I do not know.

Sorry, I own over twenty books about the IF, and many more about Russia in general, and I’m just not up to trudging downstairs to look through them all to find the quote.  It may have been the book of photographs put together by Prince Michael of Greece “Nicholas and Alexandra: The Family Albums." From looking just at the pictures she wasn't wearing her hair up when they visited Romania that spring, but her hair was up in pictures of her visiting the wounded that fall. Obviously, Alexandra was willing to bend the rules on some occassions. ;-)

Well I've got 50+ and I don't remember coming across it, so I'll have to browse through Prince Michael's book again!

Actually, I know I've seen the hair issue mentioned in a caption or two (probably in Private World of the Last Tsar, which has a number of photos of Maria with her hair up) but it's never been more than speculation on the part of the author. I'd love to have a definitive answer.

The quote I'm thinking of was from a caption, it wasn't a lengthy mention.

I think it's significant that all the photos I've seen of Maria with her hair up in 1914 were taken in informal, relatively private settings: the yacht, on picnics, at home, etc.

About Anastasia's hairstyle; it wasn't meant to be a ponytail. As you can see she had her own style and none of the other girls did their hair the same way. Alix wasn't as strict as you think. I'm sure she wouldn't have minded if Maria put her hair up before she was 16. Anastasia's ribbon was never completely up to her head so it hadn't just fallen down or anything like that. She took a bit of her hair on top and just fastened the little bow around it and it hung on the side.

These picture threads aren't the place to put colored pictures. This thread is for the real black & whites of Anastasia. Colorized ones go in Having Fun.

Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I have more reading to do.
