Looks nothing like Marie.....

I agree, looks nothing like a Romanov Grand Duchess. Marie had full pouting beautiful lips for one thing.
Why cant any of the pretenders ever be pretty like the girls were?

Naturally I am reading this without access to my extensive library (it's in the other room and I'm too lazy to go!)

But wasn't there a woman in Europe who was allegedly the daughter of Nicholas and Alexandra given away at birth because she was a fifth daughter and they just couldn't stand that?  I can't remember which Anastasia book I read it in - either Kurth or Lowell, but she had handsfuls of old rubles and some story about being raised by a family unrelated to the Romanovs.....

You read it in Blair Lovell's one. This lady was named Susana Katharina de Graaf (I haven't the book next to me, so I must be see if the first nome is right), and took the name of "Alexandra de Graaf". She lived with a respectable family in Holland. If we read Blair Lovell, Anna Anderson said that she believed Mrs. de Graaf was indeed her sister.

For me, the whole thing is a little far fetched, but... ::)

It is Lovell, the woman is deGraaff, raised in the Netherlands. [pgs 398-399 et al]

I am one of those who finds the personality and character of Alexandra to be a bit, well, kookie.  But I have a REALLY hard time believing she'd give up a child, whether because of gender or not.

If we were to believe that she would give up an infant because it was a girl, we would also have to contemplate that she would have given up Alexei because he wasn't a perfect boy.

There are lots of bizarre stories , particularly in Lovell's tome. I would not take them too terribly seriously, myself.

Lovell is not a good historical source. She added too many made up stories to his book. The King-Kong one was unbearable... :-/

James Blair Lovell was a "HE". You seem to have made him transgender.

My God! I didn't notice the idiot mistake I did! Obviously, Lovell was not a very accurate historian, but he wasn't a Yussupov-kind of person! As far as I know, he didn't like disguise himself in woman!!!  ;D ;D ::)
