Edugraf,

sorry, when I hurt your feelings or you've got the impression that I want to blame you or other people claiming back your property. That was not my intention. As I wrote my father's family, too, belongs to the people relevant. As your family they had lived there for about 600 or 700 years, lost everything they had when they were forced to leave their homeland and only got that small compensation for all they had left behind.

Therefor I can understand your point of view and I totally agree with you: these laws are unfair and as Norbert wrote in his post "immoral" and should be abolished.

Regards, Gabriella

The Czech state may fear that if it hands over historical castles etc to their former owners the site or building itself might be abused, i.e. closed to the public or renovated in an inappropriate way. I don't know how true this is, but I have heard that Castelovice, while lovingly restored in most aspects, has been spoiled by the construction of a restaurant in the court yard...do you know anything about that? Mind you, the Czech state (and in particular the former CSSR) can hardly boast about its treatment of historic buildings. There is an absolutely beautiful Romanesque Basilica in a little village called Tismice, south east of Prague. It really is a little gem. However, in the 1980s the authorities gave planning permission for the erection of a huge slaughter house complex right beside it and now they claim it would cost too much to remove the complex, as apart from the demolition costs, the owner would have to be compensated.....need I say more?

Today´s treatment of our castles is shameful, that´s true. But in the past, even though some aśmaller and less known objects were neglected or used for other purposes, we did take a great care and restored and saved many invaluable places - Castles Rabí and Švihov (where I work as a tourist guide)for instance. Suich places were for long years in ruins or served only as aristocrat´s storage. In Švihov castle´s chapel the potatoes were stored for example.

Our Castle in Hradec Nad Moravici was totally reformed by the Czech Government, and Mrs Eva Korarova did a great job with the decoration, restauration of our lost properties. They have been taken care of the place very well, and recently they opened three more rooms. But they could have a better dialogue with my family, I was there recently and was not formally invited for any of the many activities inside our Red or at the White castle. I saw some embarrassing mistakes, that could be fixed if the Director of the Museum Mr Pribyla had the good sense of answering my emails or meeting me during my 1 month stay there... The guides in the Museum were lovely and took me to tours and as I said, the problem in CR is the mentality of its athorities not of its nice people....
During the opening of the new rooms I was left unnoticed while a group of dignataries was visiting the rooms before the general public, I could only come in and see them together with this group because the guides from the museum grabed me by the hand and brought me inside. Maybe the persons taking care of the castle nowadays should remember that we took care of it for more than 150 years and bought almost everything thats in there...

I have just come across this topic, which seems to have gone quiet. May I ask if you intend applying for restitution of your family's properties ? This is a very interesting topic because I feel that the attitude of the Czech and other goverments in  Eastern Europe, is selective and unfair to some families.

Imagine, the Princely Family of Liechtenstein once owned 2 % of all land in the current Czech Republic!

1600 km², while their current principality is only 160 km², 10 % of that!

Берёзы севера мне милы,—
Их грустный, опущённый вид,
Как речь безмолвная могилы,
Горячку сердца холодит.

I could get on board with that. Its not Lie to Me levels of good but its catchy and modern and would still be the second best Czech entry and its better than the non-Lie to Me songs from the selection this year from what I remember

This time the selection will consist of eight entries and according to Mikolas Instagram, there will be four solo females, three males and a group, with the entries set to be released on January 7th
