If you look closely, Tatiana is in the back. Aleksey is supposed to be there too, but I can't find him.

What sorts of things do you look for when trying to determine when a photograph was taken?  (For instance, hair length.)

Yes, hair length is often a good clue -- one of the best for Tatiana, in fact. (She wore a wig in 1913 and had short hair in 1914.) Skirt length can also help with the girls. Figuring out where the photo was taken also helps a lot. (If the IF is on the Standart, the photo must be 1914 or earlier because their last crusie was in 1914. Most of the photos of them along the Dneiper were taken in 1915/16.) If there are other people in the photo, don't forget to look for hair and wardrobe clues on them as well, such as Aleksei's army uniform (1914-17), or Alexandra's unfortunate "Mickey Mouse ears" hairstyle (1912). Just as often it's a matter of recognizing that a photo was taken at the same time as another with a solid date.

In the case of the photo clock posted of Tatiana with the officer on the Standart: I've seen other photos of Tatiana in that dress on the Standart. Her hair is short, so it must be later than 1913, and the fact that she's on the yacht means it can't be later than 1914. Other photos of Tatiana with her sisters on the yacht in that outfit confirm the date through their hair and dress styles.

I'm guessing 1912. Both Olga and Tatiana wore their hair tied back in ponytails when they were 15. It seems to have been an intermediate step toward wearing their hair up.

I tought it was when they have 16. A girl put her hair up and begins to wear long dresses`when she reached her 16...Until she had 16, she was dressed as a girl and her hair was down or in childish hairdoss. Of course, this was only when grown up women started to wear her hair up, for in other times, before the Victorian era, grown-up women and girls would wore their hair both , up or down. There were different hairdoss and girls and grown up ladies would wear their hear in the same styles without any difference of age.

Yes, the girls began wearing their hair up at 16. However, Tatiana caught typhoid in February of 1913 and had her hair cut short *before* she turned 16. As far as I know, there are no photos of her wearing her own hair up until *after* 1914 when it grew back.

That's why I think the photo VelkokneznaMaria posted was taken in 1912. It looks like Tatiana's hair is up, but that's not possible because of the typhoid. If you look closely, you can see just a little bit of the large white ribbon that's holding her long hair back behind her neck. Olga wore a similar style the year she was 15 (1910).
