Olga in Waiting in Tobolsk play
« on: February 24, 2007, 04:17:29 PM »
Just wondering if any of you have ever read the script of Waiting in Tobolsk before? It's written by Norman Allen in 2005, and you can even buy it at playscripts.com

There's a copy distributed freely on the Net, with the first 40 pages available. I got that yesterday, and it is very interestingly written! Basically, you see that Olga is aware and disturbed by what is going on in their lives, and the interaction between Olga, her sisters, brother, and mother is really convincing...but I will not spoil the fun; read it!!

If you read the sample on the website, that's nearly the whole play. I was surprised to find when my script arrived in the mail that there were only about 3 more pages left!

Yeah, I really liked the play! And I would certainly go to the theater to watch it!

I was planning to buy the script, but since Sarushka told us that there's only 2 or 3 more pages, I don't know...

By the way, Sarushka, how does it end?  ;)

I love reading that play! Too bad I can't print it out, I don't know if it's because of my adobe reader or the security thing from the site. Thanks mr. harrision for sharing the play to us! Btw, Sarushka just like the above post, how does it end? ;D

In general I like what has been made available to us! However, the Cast of Characters notes Olga is 23 years of age, and I think most of us know Olga never attained her 23rd year. Also, George's consort was Queen Mary and not Queen Anne. Then there are the references to War and Peace. From what I've read, it's questionable that OTMA knew much (if anything) about Tolstoy, let alone War and Peace, tho' the usuage works well enough as a dramatic device. We also know the discussion re: the transfer from Toblosk did not go quite as depicted, but again the playwright may simply have intended to reflect rather than replicate reality. On the plus side, I think the playwright was successful in the depiction of the intellectual discussions between Sasha (a plausible dramatic creation) and Olga, as well as the interactive tone between Olga, Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia, the latter of which seems almost entirely spot-on!

In Kate Moira Ryan's "OTMA" it is also established that Olga is 23. It seems to be a common mistake among playwrights- apparently both of them just subtracted years.

Aloha all!

Just a thought guys -- you really shouldn't ask Sarushka about the ending of the play -- you know she paid for it and the playwright is charging for the screenplay in full -- so you are kind of putting her in an awkward situation when you ask her for it.   ???

Just my thoughts!   ;D

Also, The Fate of the Romanovs gives Olga's age as 23.
