1913 Formal Portrait of TN
« on: March 08, 2007, 04:09:27 AM »
I've tried the search feature and gone through many photographs to no avail.  If it isn't any trouble,
can anyone help me find or direct me to a specific photo of TN.  It is, I beleive, from the series of Tercentenary photos of the enire IF individualy and in groups, all in formal court dress taken in 1913.

I've found one of ON full length, standing and I know one of TN (also full length, standing) exists around here somewhere, but I cannot find it.

I've found a very unusual, quite splendid, antique, carved gilt wood frame that has four oblong insert points along the bottom with two larger oval inserts above and a smaller oval slightly below and between these two.  It would be perfect for a grouping of the family's tercentenary photos.  I have beautiful formal photos of Nicholas and Alexandra and a charming head shot of Alexei for the the oval inserts.  I would like to insert the four Grand Duchesses (in similar full length poses ---if they all exist standing) in the oblong inserts at the bottom.

I have lovely photos of MN and AN,which I could use, but they are not standing, nor are they in full court dress--I haven't seen photos of the younger GD's in similar, full length, standing posesas are their older sisters--only seated in white dresses.  If anyone knows of the existence of all four GD's standing in formal court dress and  full length--they would be perfect and make the piece quite impressive.  I have an artist friend who can render the photos into miniature paintings.

If I can find all the photos and put it together, I'll scan and post the finished framed group.  I think it should be quite impressive and very beautiful.

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice that can be offered.

Always,
Alexei,

Here's what I have of Tatiana Nikolaevna in formal court dress in 1913:

I have two photos of Olga from the same session, so one of these should be new to you:

And one more of the big pair, just for good measure!

I have never seen any photos of the little pair in full-length court dress. There is a series from 1910 in which they're wearing scaled-down court dresses (knee/calf length) according to their age. If you'd like to see those, I'll be happy to post them.

Thanks for that first one you posted Sarushka! I have that one in a little better quality here. I think it's touched up though. :-\ I always thought it was a close-up from one of the other ones!

Alexei,
That's a very creative idea!

Sarushka is correct, as of today there are no known photographs of Maria or Anastasia in full-length court dress. The is a series of all of OTMA from 1910 in court dress, but they aren't full length. I doubt a photograph of Anastasia in full-length court dress ever existed because by the time she was old enough, she was under house arrest. And a photograph of Maria in that dress would be a grand treat for all of us because there is no record of her ever having one.

BUT now that I think about it, a photograph or two may exist of the Little Pair in full-length court dress. I mean, little sisters love to borrow their sisters' clothes. Maybe Alexandra or Olga might have taken a picture of them dressing up. I doubt it, though.  :)

This thread got me thinking -- as far as I know, there are NO individaul or "pair" photos of Maria or Anastasia from 1913. I wonder why? They may not have been old enough to be photographed in full-length court dress, but I find it hard to believe that no individual portraits of any sort were taken of the younger children during the tercentary year. I'm away from my laptop at the moment, but I believe I noticed while posting this morning that both Olga and Tatiana have non-court dress poses that year... :-\

Dear Saruska,

Thank you so much! The one I have of ON is the one one you posted on the right and the one I had in mind of TN is exactly the one you posted the third from the left.  They are all lovely.  I would love to see what you have on the little pair in modified court dresses you mentioned, they might work well in the ensemble if all were sized to compliment one another. It's probably correct that MN and AN were two young to be photographed formallly in "grown up" court gowns in 1913.

I was going to put one of the famous three quarter head shots of Alexei in the middle, but what do you think of using the famous one of him in the cossack uniform---or would that be too much?

Your thoughtful posts and insight are greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your help and insights.

Alexei

Not that I know of. That closeup is a screen shot from a Russian documentary, and I don't think they zoomed in on Olga like that.

You're very welcome.

I think it's hard to go wrong, whichever photo you choose! ;) It's really a matter of personal taste. I rather like this one, myself, if you think the cossack uniform is too much:

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. The file isn't dated in my collection, but he looks too young for 1913 to me.
