I am also reading this book. I agree simply written and banal.
If you do not have good knowledge of the extended royal family, or, a good familly tree nearby, you will struggle with family that is mentioned.  Lots of going to church. Lots of regimental reviews and riding full gallop towards TheTsar.

But
I did find one interesting thing, that I didnot know,  and that is Gabriel was imprisoned  in Gorohovaya Street, along with
GD Nic Mikail/GD Dmitri Constan/GD Paul Alexander/Ioann, Constantine and Igor Constant/Sergie Michael/ GD Elizabeth and  GR George Michael
[ please excuse the shortening of their names] He was released and lived. All the other were murdered.

Can anyone tell me anything about this prison please?

my advise to you is to learn more about genealogy of the romanovs or check facts while reading the book otherwise the book will be just a combination of some stories about parades in front of the tzar. by the way, the books simplicity is the book`s advantage as it shows day-to-day life of the imperial family.it`s a view of someone who was not interested in politics but led a quite life and was able to detect interestin g details of his and his family`s life.this is also an advantage

I have a good knowledge of the imperial family and keep my well worn family tree with me and refer to hand made notices on various people, whenever I read a russian royal book.

I have things I want to ask about this book but didn't want to start a whole new topic so I hope it's alright that I post here.

Can someone who has read this book tell me how much information is has on his siblings and parents? If you were writing a book about Imperial Russia would you make sure to add this one to your collection? I ask because I'm considering purchasing it but won't if all the information on his siblings is only what is already on this site and wikipedia.

I personally really loved it. It had some details about his sisters wedding for example.

I thought it was an interesting read - he has more positive attitude toward Empress Alexandra then many members of the Romanov extended family in their memoirs. Being a military man, he also provides some interesting detaiil about Olga's and Tatiana's role in regimental parades.

After an abismal experience I had with ordering the book from Eurohistory.com (I paid for a book that was supposed to be "in stock" but receiving nothing for more than 8 months, that were filled with pleading e-mails from me and deep silence from the other side, and thankfully in the end I at least got my money back) I am at an end of my wits of where to buy the book for some reasonable price. Amazon prize is around 200 (and more) dollars, which is simply ridiculous. Hoogstraten no longer offers the book either. Any advice? This is one of those books I would really love to have.
