I would like to know more about the count Pyotr Andreyevich....with whom was he married...There's a lot of information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyotr_Andreyevich_Shuvalov but it don't says if Pyotr Andreyevich married...

Was he the Count Peter who was the father of five daughters including Princess Olga Petrovna Doulgoruky (died 1927,Paris) and Countess Sophie Petrovna Benckendorff (whose husband -died 1916-was Russian ambassador to Gt Britain and a twin of Count Paul Benckendorff). ?

Pyotr Andreyevich Shuvalov was a son of Andrei Petrovich Shuvalov (himself a son of Piotr Andreyevich Shuvalov and his wife princess Sophia
Grigorievna Shcherbatova) and Tekla Walentinowicz, princess Zubow. Your Pyotr married 24.05.1864 countess Yelena Ivanovna Orlova-Denisova, a daughter of Ivan Dmitrievich Tchertkov and Yelena Stroganova.

Your Piotr and Yelena had a son, named Andrei, who was born at Rundale Palace, Courland, 11.11.1865.

My husband’s great grandfather worked as some kind of admistrator for a Count Shuvalov of the Shuvalov palace on the Fontanka, from the 1890’s until the revolution. From various Russian web sources I gathered that the count occupying the palace at the time was Pavel Petrovich Shuvalov and after his death in 1902, his widow Betsy - there are some interesting pictures elsewhere on this forum.  Do you know of any books or other sources with information about these people & life at the palace at the time?

Countess Betsy escaped and died in Paris in August 1938..I have often wondered of her life in exile but have never been able to discover any details...

A whole chapter is dedicated to Betsy Shuvalov in a book about women in the life of C.G.E. Mannerheim (Finland’s two-time Commander-in-Chief, President of the Republic etc.), written by Leonid Vlasov .  The book was published in Finnish in 2002 and later in Russian.  Countess Shuvalov apparently had a long term on-and-off relationship with Mannerheim, who was 12 years her junior.  He was an officer of the Chevalier Guards at the time.

Her later life according to Vlasov: The Countess had to leave her palace after the Bolsheviks confiscated it in January 1918.  She stayed in different apartments of her friends, before fleeing to her house in Yalta.  There she organized a hospital for anti Bolshevik soldiers.  In the end of October 1920 she left Yalta on an Italian steamer called Corvin.  There were only a few cabins on the boat, but she was given one.  Later she lived in Paris.  Her health was not good, but she didn’t like to obey her doctors’ orders.  She thought old age was God’s joke, and declined to celebrate her 80th birthday – because she felt her soul was only 18 and loved poetry, music and painting.  She didn’t like to go to the funerals of other emigrants but did attend the funeral of Anastasia Arapova, Mannerheim’s ex-wife.  Countess Shuvalov’s grave is in the cemetery of Saint-Genevieve-des-Bois.

Vlasov’s main source for all this seems to be Lev Ljubimov, a journalist whose mother knew the Countess in Paris.

Thankyou very much for the information...I wonder how Betsy supported herself in exile...she may have saved some jewels or had funds abroad..at one time I think she had owned a villa in Biarritz.
