Hardenberg
« on: April 11, 2007, 04:55:02 AM »
I need your help to find information and pictures about Karl August von Hardenberg, the famous prussian chancellor, his three wives -specially the first of them, Juliane countess Reventlow- and his children -specially his daughter Lucie Anne, reichsgräffin von Papenheim through a first marriage, and fürstin von Pückler-Muskau through a second marriage.
Thanks a lot.

I cannot tell you anything about this man. What I do wonder, however, is whether Kuno, Count von Hardenberg, who came to work as Hofmarschall  (Lord Chamberlain of the Household??) at the court of Hesse-Darmstadt shortly before WWI was a descendant or in any other way related to Karl August von Hardenberg.

He must have been from countly branch of Hardenbergs since Princely line is extinct in male line!I just know that Countess Julie von Hardenberg(her husband was not a Prince at that time and was ambassador in England) caused a scandal in Great Britain because of her affaire with George IV(at that time Prince if I am not mistaken)...I am not sure but I think tht that was the reason for their divorce...

You´re talking about the first wife of Karl August von Hardenberg: Juliane Frederika Christiane, countess Reventlow. In 1774, when she was just fifteen years old, she was married to Karl August. To say the true, Karl August married her by his father´s desire, not by his own desire. The marriage was not a succesful one: the countess bore him a son and a daughter, named Lucie, later princess Pückler-Muskau, but at the end it was a great scandal when she was involved with the Prince of Wales, Prinny.

Totally off-topic,ofcourse,but there is a dutch branch of the Hardenberg family. One of the then Princess Juliana's "classmates" at Huis ten Bosch Palace during WWI was Elisa van Hardenberg, who remained a life long friend. :)

Thanks for the information. Off-topic it may be, but it's interesting to know that the Von/Van Hardenberg family had connections both with Grand-Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and with our late queen. :)

Don't forget Archduke Ferdinand married Css Katharina von Hardenberg in 1999. I have a note that she is descended from George II of GB by Amelie von Wedt, Countess of Yarmouth
