Daughter of Stephanie Grand Duchess of Baden, cousin of Empress Josephine's first husband.

Are we sure that's not Grand Duchess Louise of Baden (nee Prussia)? It looks more like paintings and photos I've seen of her and the time period seems off for Josephine--who was born in 1813.

Well, the picture was taken from the book "Rainhas Que o Povo Amou" [Queens Loved by the People] by Maria Antónia Lopes and there this picture was labeled as Josephine of Baden, the mother of Queen Stephanie of Portugal. However, as it often happens, it might have been mislabeled. As I don't have not seen many pictures of the two ladies, it is out of my reach to confirm which one is it. If others can confirm it, I would be very glad! :)

It's Josephine of Baden. A photo of her to compare with the portrait:

That's Josephine's portrait, personally I don't see a resemblance to Louise.

Princess Josephine of Baden, wife of Prince Karl Anton:

I was thinking it reminded me of Louise

The styling and clothing just seemed off for Josephine to me and reminded me of Louise. Even though they weren't close blood relations, I think they looked very similar! Plus, it's easier with portraits than with photographs to have a bit of artistic license. I guess it is Josephine though.

Veronica--thank you for the photo of Josephine. That's the one I wanted to find for a comparison but didn't have time to do much in-depth searching yesterday.

I wonder where the painting is...It is not in Schloss Sigmaringen as I was there. It could be in storage.

The painting is obviously up for an auction now...it used to belong to the House of Baden, but they sold the painting in 1995 at Sotheby's auction...
