Luise and her father:

I wonder if she was in mourning for her uncle, the late Prussian King?

Is that Luise?  I have seen that picture before and it was captioned as Augusta.....and I thought she looked so young, but then again, it does resemble Luise!  Thank you grandduchessella!

I've seen the card offered different places and times and it always said 'Luise' and some of the sellers were German--so I'll take their word.  :)

Great portrait Marc. I wonder if she's wearing mourning for her father and/or brother? I think she wore white mourning the rest of her life for her husband, plus was pretty elderly when he died.

Does anyone know exactly how she and (her brother) Fritz got along? Vicky mentions her off & on in different letters but it's not very in-depth and sometimes Luise & Vicky clash. Wilhelm & Augusta were difficult parents in a very unhappy marriage and this supposedly effected the children. Sometimes siblings are brought closer together but I never got that feeling with these 2. Has anyone read anything more--perhaps in German--on the relationship?

I noticed the white clothing, too.  She really looked good in the white garments and jewels.  I've heard that royalty has the prerogrative of wearing white for mourning, I wonder why more did not do it.  The constant black must have been tiring.

She was certainly a striking lady and carried herself well.  She always seems to stand out in the pictures.

Thanks, Crazy, for the great pictures!

Louise's daughter-in-law was Hilda of Nassau. She was the youngest siblings of GD William of Luxemburg (father of the 6 lovely Luxemburg Princesses). They had 2 siblings who died in infancy and a brother who died as a teenager. There was a 12 year spread between William and Hilda. Their father, GD Adolph, had previously been married to GDss Elizabeth Mikhailovna who died, along with their child, in childbirth.

'Fritz' and Hilda had no children (and Louise's other son had died in infancy) so the throne of Baden went to Fritz's cousin Max (who married Thyra's daughter Marie Louise after having broken his engagement to GDss Helen Vladimirovna), the grandson of GDss Marie N. 'Good, dear Fritz' as QV and Vicky both described him, had been put forward by QV as a potential spouse for Ella and she was very disappointed when Ella refused. Since Ella had previously turned down Wilhelm, Empress Augusta was very angry at this 2nd snub of a grandson of hers and in turn 'cut' the Hessian princesses at Court. Louise was apparently put out as well.

Interesting that Luise and Vicky did not get along. She found Luise false and unfeeling.

They got along very well in the early days, it was later that the relationship began to sour.

Does anyone know if Louise's daughter Victoria (Queen of Sweden) was named for Vicky?

Especially when Fritz died, and Luise went at once to Willy's camp and refuse to grieve over her brother. The letters to Queen Victoria made her look cruel, unfeeling and an opportunist. I think her daughter was named after Vicky's mother, the Great Queen Victoria.

Does anyone have any info on Prince Ludwig of Baden (b.1865-d.1888) he was the brother of Grand Duke Fredrick II and Queen
Victoria of Sweden.  Also, if you have any pic please post them.

According to the diary of Archduchess Marie Valérie her cousin Princess Maria Theresia of Bourbon-Sicily had been in love with him.

He was the favourite of his mother, Grand Duchess Luise.
