Sofka was a dear 'babu' for many dispalced emigre compatriots who were fortunate enough to cross her path. My mother, for example, was one those fortunate few. With a book shop in Cornwall, her family scattered across the globe, Mummy met Sofka, as an infrequent customer and estabished a warm friendship ignited by the discovery of the bond of Russian roots. Russian blood seems to me to be like mercury!
Sofka was an extraordinary character, warm, kind, tey in some vague but certain way, always detatched. She was wonderfully kind and indugent to us as children...heaps of goodies on the table and kisses at the door..! The moor so suited her!
