It was for the famous 1903 ball. There's a thread on the ball itself (in the Imperial Family section) which might give more detail about their outfits.

Yes, there is thread '1903' including many photos of that event. Also, there is one of Ella alone, I think, not sure.

IMO, now I know why QVicky wasn't so impressed of Ella's husband.
It's really rue that Serge's eyes conceal something we don't know.
If he only gained more pounds, I'm sure he's gonna look handsome.

The photos with such watermark has been bought by a German site/company from the GARF (State Russian Archive).

It's wonderful that this German company is buying rights to some GARF pics since it's a source of income for GARF. I'm assuming the fee that the German company paid/pays goes back to maintaining the archives at GARF.
