The Queen of England wore her sapphire and pearl drop brooch on her first trip to Russia. It was a wedding gift from Edward the Seventh and Queen Alexandra to Empress Marie Feodorovna, and was purchased by Queen Mary via Hennell's when the jewel collection of the Dowager Empress was put up for sale. She wore it to make the point that her family had ties to the Imperial Family of Russia.

I have also read someplace that after Xenia and Olga picked out the items that they wanted to keep for sentimental reasons, the items that went unsold by Hennel's were returned to Xenia, and she kept them. Perhaps it was mentioned in the book ALWAYS A GRAND DUCHESS.

Hope I am posting in the right thread, as there are so many in this board. I am very interested in the Fabergé Eggs and found this picture on the internet of the bolsheviks and imperial treasures.

On the picture are at least 5 Eggs (in white circles), but maybe more. Does anyone have a better/bigger picture without the red markings?

And how annoying that I recall seeing that picture just a while ago on some book. But which one, I cannot say. Have you tried the usual Fabergé books by A. Kenneth Snowman and Geza Habsburg?

Yes, that is annoying.  I know I've seen it as well.  I just thumbed through a number of my  books - just the big picture books - and couldn't find it in any of them.  Perhaps it's in one of the biographies... I'll try to see if I can find it as well.

So, is that the picture which has the tiaras which were probably for the use of Nicholas' daughters?

Lets say if the Russian Royal Family was ever restored do you think the heir or person acting as Tsar can buy back the jewels from the Queen and other royals?

In the extreme case that the monarchy was ever restored, probably not. It's like the Alexander Palace for example. Many of her treasures were sent to the Pavlovsk and Catherine Palaces for "safe keeping" and now that she's partially restored, they are generally unwilling to return the items. The jewels have been in the possession of the English royal family for a long time and I doubt that they would or would be expected to return them.

Among the gems saved by the Dowager Empress and later put up for sale by her daughters was a brooch made of a large button pearl framed in brilliants and with a drop of 2 more pearls. This item was the only gem not sold by Hennells and returned to GDss Xenia in 1934. It was later sold to Lydia ,second wife of the oil millionaire Sir Henri Deterding who was russian by birth and collected various historic gems including the " Polar Star" diamond and the " Azra" black pearl which had belonged to the Youssoupoff family,and a fabulous emerald pendant from the collection of Princess Annastasia of Greece ( nee Nancy Leeds). After Lady Deterdings death the brooch was among the spectacular gems from her collection auctioned in Geneva by Christies.

well, actually, that tiara was not part of the original collection.   it's a modern interpretation of tiara that has not been seen since the famous auction of 1927.
