Does anyone know what the correct spelling is Yekaterinburg or Ekaterinburg, and how is it pronounced?

The empasis (stress) is on  "burg" I believe.

 Hi Grand_Duke_Alexei,

Ekaterinburg is the English translation, whereas Yekaterinburg is the phonetic form which helps the English language speaker to pronounce the name more correctly.

Both are acceptable.

Phonetically, and this straight from a native of that fair city:

Yeck-ah-tyer-in-BOORG (first four syllables prounced swiftly, accent on the final)

Oh, and natives do NOT believe that both are correct and are typically annoyed when the name of their city is mispronounced, especially the incredibly uncouth (but oddly not uncommon)  "Eee-cat-ah-REEN-burg".
Gross!

I always pronounce it Yekaterinburg, but why is the other spelling considered uncouth?

The city's German Wikipedia article has a sound bite in which you can hear a native Russian speaker pronounce the name. Turn up the sound and listen: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/31/Ru-Yekaterinburg.ogg

This posting is a bit tardy, but Paul Gilbert reported an interesting item.

I doubt that it will be acted upon, but it certainly is an indication of how far things have come in 100 years.

Some of us plan to go to Russia in 2018 to commemorate the Imperial Family.
