These pictures are so great!!
It's wonderful to see the Romanovs caught off-guard instead of posing. It makes them seem more like real flesh-and-blood people, not so very different from us.

It almost looks like Tatiana's got a cigarette in her hand.  I know from other threads that the Grand Duchesses smoked, but would Tatiana be smoking in front of visitors?

Is it just my imagination or does Tatiana seem as if she was smoking??? I know they smoked but i doubted they would do it being their mother so close by...

I think that is indeed Alexandra.

I am also surprised that Tatiana would be smoking right next to her mother, as I thought that Alexandra didn't like her daughters doing so. However, she knew they did, since Nicholas himself taught them to smoke. But if she is smoking, I guess either Alexandra didn't really mind or Tatiana is just playing around and pretending to be smoking.

No she is really smoking. O and T smoked regularly. I even recall a letter when one of them thanks N for sending her cigarettes...

Back then, smoking wasn't the big evil taboo it is today. I've really seen it go from acceptable to villanized just in my own lifetime.

In exile, Grand Duke Boris posed for advertisements for Melachrino cigarettes. I have also read that Queen Victoria, no less, in her old age would enjoy a cigarette along with Princess Beatrice - so if 'Grandmama' engaged in the practice, for Alix and her daughters, that might have set a precedent. Incidentally, I have never seen a picture VRI with cigarette...but should love to!
