Another Imperial Needlwork translation please
« on: June 03, 2007, 02:47:43 PM »
A very nice lady wrote me asking about a beautiful Russian Embroidery blanket or tablecover she owns, It clearly has the entwined monogram for Alexander III and Marie Feodorovna on one corner. It is heavily covered with flowers and fine bead work, and it bears this inscription and the date of October 23, 1891.  It appears to be a coronation gift to them perhaps??

I can not make out the first and third words, the second seems to say Alexander. Any help would be appreciated for the kind woman Rosemary.

"Orlovskiy Alexandrinskiy Institute". October 23,1891. I guess tha's a thing from an Alexandrinskiy Institute in Orel (town in Russia).Unlikely a coronation gift  :)

Right, it's the Alexandrinsky Institute for Noble Maidens in Oryol. As to the date, it probably relates to a visit paid to the institute by the Imperial couple on their way back from Livadia. Oryol is a major station on the Sevastopol - Moscow railway line, and late October was the time when they usually returned from Crimea to Petersburg.
