"Clothes Make the Woman" 1928 Silent Movie

HI...

I was just wondering if anyone has seen this film... It is silent and deals with the escape of Anastasia going along the lines of Anna Anderson's claim of how she escaped (a Revolutionary finds saves her when she is unconcious in the cellar after the murders)... I've seen a few clips of this movie so I know it exists.

Yes; there are clips of it in "Nova's" Anastasia's Video. You may see the scene of the corpses being loaded in the truck...And a very 1920-ish Anastasia escaping in a car toward the west!!!   Yes! You read correctly! Driving a car! Too hilarious!

Oh dearie me...a car? that is very *cough*interesting in it's own way...if nothing else, it sounds entertaining. In a strange way, that makes me want to see it...

Yes...and you'll laugh a great deal when you see this Anastasia with melodramatic -white face and big eyes sourrounded with very dark, almost black painting and little hearted.shaped lips...Actually she was more Betty Boop than Anastasia!   And, of course, she looks like she was 20 or 30 years old, not 17...

I have searched all over the place for this film (along with "the Romanovs: a crowned family") to no avail.  I guess it is lost... I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it or know if it's in existence.

Yes. There are clips in NOVA and on "Ancient Mysteries". The movie was made in 1928 when Anastasia Tschaivkovsky was in the United States. It is supposedly about some guy who's a movie producer and hires a girl to play Anastasia, but then realizes that the girl really IS Anastasia, because he is the guy who saved her from Ekaterinburg.

Walter Pidgeon was loaned out by his parent studio Warner Bros. to star in the Tiffany-Stahl production Clothes Make the Woman. Yet another variation of the "Anastasia" legend (with a bit of Josef Von Sternberg's The Last Command thrown in), the film casts Pidgeon as a former Russian peasant who emigrates to Hollywood and becomes a powerful movie producer (such things did happen!) While producing his latest epic, Pidgeon spots a familiar-looking female extra (Eve Southern). Sure enough, the girl turns out to be the "lost" Princess Anastasia, last of the Romanoffs. Having previously fallen in love with the Princess when he shielded her from harm during the 1917 Revolution, Pidgeon decides to produce a film based on her life and experiences, with himself as the leading man. But thanks to a tragic on-set accident, Anastasia is once more lost to the world -- this time permanently. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Not particularly interested in the Anna Anderson angle of it whatsoever as I've always believed Anastasia perished with the rest of her family. However, would like to see it simply because I'm a big fan of B&W silent flicks. The film doesn't appear to be available in any home media format as of yet and most likely might never be at this point.

Never heard of this one. Don't think my bank balance can take much more at preset! I have more books recently than I have in the last 10 years on the romonov family.
