I don't think I've ever seen a photo of the Baltatzar inscription before.  8)

The quote on the wall of the cellar comes from the Bible, the book of Daniel, chapter 5. Someone of the Reds had a macabre sense of irony...Belshatzar (Balthazar) was a weak (and the last)Babylonian king (coregent of his father, Nabonidus), and died when Babylon was taken by the Persians, in 539 BC. Apparently, he was killed by his servants...

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Yurovsky who wrote it.

Yes, you're right. I believe he's with his Hessian (or possibly Greek) cousins in the bottom one.

Yes you're right Sarushka, Alexis is with his Hessian cousins.  ;)

I have a bigger version somewhere I'll post if no one else has it first. I still think it's Maria and Anastasia. I have it in 2 books both labeled as Maria and every other place I've seen it, it's said to be Maria.

Taken under captivity in Tobolsk, 1917 or 1918:

Olga with Anastasia, and Alexei on a swing:

Here it is larger. I also believe it's Olga and Anastasia. The posture, height, and weight all say Olga to me.

Which books do you have in, Holly? I've only found it so far in Royal Russia, and neither of the girls are identified -- it's just Aleskei and "two of his sisters."  ::)

You'd think we could figure it out by the color of their sweaters, but looking at other pictures from Tobolsk, it appears the girls interchanged their hats, scarves, and sweaters....
