Hi to one and all,

I know I always seem to come with questions....but........

I am struggling to get clear pictures of the Grand Duchesses' monograms.  I have only seen them illustrated on the small presentation easter eggs the GD's gave out.  If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks

The book "Nicholas II: The Imperial Family" by Abris Publications has black and white illustrations of the Grand Duchesses' bookplates / cyphers. They are the same cyphers painted on the porcelain eggs you mentioned above, although I have never seen an egg with Anastasia's cypher represented in the book. However, they are the same cyphers for Olga, Tatiana, and Marie. I have seen eggs with a old slavonic conjoined AN which is usually attributed to the Tsarevitch Alexis.

Here is a link to an Imperial Presentation watch with the cypher of Anastasia as represented in the book.

All four of the girls' bookplates are in the book: Olga pg 72; Tatiana pg 78; Maria pg 82; Anastasia pg 88. They all follow the same basic format of intertwined initials surmounted by an imperial crown (see scan below of Olga's bookplate).

Aleksei's bookplate is very different from his sisters' -- an angel holding a shield with an imperial eagle and "HII" emblazoned on it. Printed in an arc over the angel's head are the words "From the library of his imperial highness the heir tsesarevich and grand duke Aleksei Nikolaevich." It's on page 66. I'm sorry I can't get a good scan without breaking the book's back\.  :-\

The letter "H" in the Russian cyrillic alphabet = "N" in English. ;)

I have gone through my books on Russian heraldry and found nothing. Would they even have individual arms until they wrere married?  They would have ciphers, of course, but I think they may have just used their father's arms until they were married and then emblazoned with whomever it was.

I have a picture, somewhere on my computer, that shows a grouping of what looks like postcards. There are seven of them. The caption read that these were Nicholas, his wife, and childrens coat of arms. You can tell from the picture that they were all different. I will try to find the picture and post it. It is hard to see the detail of each one since it is a picture of all of them together.

Okay, after much effort I found the picture and this is the best I can do to post it. I have not mastered the technique of posting pictures yet.
