Escapees, Emigres and Real Romanov Survivors
« on: July 29, 2007, 04:41:44 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good book or article that concentrates on how members of the Russian aristocracy and nobility in general were killed or escaped from the Revolution rather than debating the fate of the immediate royal family?

Sure, try The Flight of the Romanovs  by Percy & Pleshakov.   :)

Some very good ones are right here on this site. These people were connected to the IF, but had stories of their own, about themselves and those they witnessed along the way.

These are all posted on this site:

"Memories of the Russian Court" by Anna Vyrobova (latter part of the book describes her escapes)
"Left Behind" by Sophie Buxhoevedon (very good account of the dangerous situation in Siberia during the civil war, tells of how she, Gilliard and Gibbes escaped, mentions details of deaths and atrocities witnessed by the author)
"Lost Splendor" by Felix Yussoupov (later parts of the book tell of his escape, and fates of others after the revolution)
"Memoirs of Alexei Volkov" (tells of his escape and horrors he witnessed along the way)

other books recommended that aren't posted here:

"Romanov Autumn" by Charlotte Zeepvat (includes the exciting story of the perils and escape of Helene of Serbia, mentions the deaths of her husband and his brothers, the Konstantinovichi, who died with GD Ella)

"Nicholas and Alexandra: A Lifelong Passion" (later chapters describe the murders of Ella and the Konstantinovichi, other Grand Dukes)

I like the real survivor stories. The real Romanovs who escaped Russia such as Grand Duchess Olga and her sister Grand Duchess Xenia and their Mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna and other real Romanovs. Their stories are truly fascinating.

I have always found the stories of those who got away to be very fascinating. Felix Yussoupov tells a great account of their days in the Crimea and their eventual rescue on the Marlborough with the Dowager Empress. Other interesting escape stories are told by Alexei Volkov, Anna Vyrubova, Sophie Buxhoevedon and Helen of Serbia. Too bad these exciting true stories are lost under the pile of rubbish that was the fictional 'escape' stories of the claimants.

There is a book AS I REMEMBER THEM, by Galina Von Meck which tells her story of escaping from Russia, but she only did so aroungd1932, and she did suffer under Stalin a lot. She was a friend of Felix Youssupov.I love this book

So why don't we discuss some of their stories here? Anyone up for that?

Yes these stories are fact and not fabricated works of fiction. I guess that is why so many find the lives of Maria Feodorovna and her daughters fascinating as they had to deal with enormous changes caused by the abdication of Nicholas II and the resulting crash of the Romanov dynasty and the Russian Empire. I am glad some of the Romanovs survived all of this as the Bolsheviks would have liked to have murdered all of them.
