Romanov's Burial Site and DNA Evidence
« on: July 31, 2007, 06:44:56 PM »
I noticed on tonight's National Geographic Channel TV the following:

9:00 EST "Mystery of the Romanovs"

"When Russia's last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family disappeared almost 90 years ago, eyewitness accounts indicated the family was brutally murdered. Now, the National Geographic Channel takes viewers inside this famous murder mystery. Follow along as forensic scientists attempt to identify remains that were discovered near the possible murder site. Will modern science shed new light on the Mystery of the Romanovs?"

Enjoy!

Just saw a preview of this show - looks like a simple re-hash of what is already known as opposed to providing some new and interesting information.  We'll see.

I watched it and was throwing my hands up in disgust. Like all other shows (mainly on A & E and the History Channel) they mis-identified the girls! Calling Tatiana Marie!!!!!  :P :P :P :P

Over all it wasn’t too bad, but the misnaming of the three oldest girls was laughable. What was even funnier was at one point they showed a picture of Olga and said it Marie, then later on, showed another picture of Olga and said it was Tatiana.

You would think National Geographic of all people would have gotten their facts right, but the show is still worth a look.

Finally got to see this documentary. Very disappointing. Nothing at all new, the way they presented things will confuse many people who are already confused as far as the identification of the Romanov remains, etc. The worst were the mistakes they made when they talked about the science.. Prince Philip's DNA matched the putative Nicholas II's? Why would that be?
Then they kept saying that all these scientists still question the results of the DNA tests, and that they don't trust them, and that all these historians feel the same way. What scientists and historians? The two scientists who have "questioned" the results have absolutely no credibility, never followed through with anything to prove that the results were indeed questionable, and this has been clearly demonstrated... And I am not aware of any serious historian who is still questioning the DNA results... So why even bring it up in this documentary?

Honestly, I am not even sure why they bothered making it...

Unfortunately it's episode 12 which will not be for weeks.

The Romanov Royal Family
After ruling Russia for 300 years, the Romanov royal family disappeared on July 18, 1918, thought to have been executed by Bolsheviks. For 70 years, myths persisted about what happened to Tsar Nicolas, his wife Alexandria, and their five children. Then, in 1991, nine skeletons were discovered in Siberia. A year later, Baden and a team of scientists traveled to Russia to examine the remains. The bodies had been shot, and bullets found in one corpse were consistent to those used in 1918. After estimating the height and weight and checking teeth, the bodies were confirmed to be those of the Romanovs and their servants - except for Anastasia and Alexi, the two youngest children. For years, a woman named Anna Anderson had claimed to be Anastasia, but she was cremated upon her death in 1984. However, DNA from an appendix she had removed confirmed that Anna was not a royal. The real Romanovs were buried in St. Petersburg in 1998 - but two crypts (for Anastasia and Alexi) remain empty.

ROMANOV UPDATE:
In August, 2007, there was an announcement from Russia that two burned skeletons had been found buried less than hundred yards from the main burial site. Recent forensic anthropologic examination indicates that the remains are likely those of the missing Romanov children. Confirmation awaits DNA analysis which has not yet been performed.

(the above 'update' has been added just since yesterday, so I'm assuming the episode will not mention it. Also they are wrong to say Anastasia's crypt is empty, the Russians have it as Marie's, and it wasn't an appendix but intestines)

Another mistake, that's three. I wonder how accurate the story will be!

The show premeires tonight with the first episode, so I assume that 11 weeks from tonight the Romanov one will air. I have signed up for their email updates, so when I find out for sure I'll post it here right away!

I think the OJ episode may be more interesting, although I am curious as to how they will handle the Romanovs...

Here's a list of all the episodes:

http://www.hbo.com/autopsy/episode/index.html

Looks like OJ, JFK and the Romanovs will be on the same one, I hope this doesn't mean they won't give enough time to each one. With all those episodes I am surprised they can't give each topic its own spotlight.
