"Years of the Golden Cockerel" by Sidney

Does anyone have any thoughts on this one? I am always seeing used books on Ebay or Alibris and wondering if they are worth looking into.

This was published in 1968 and concerns the last Romanov Tsars (1814-1917). I have read so much on this subject now that I rarely find anything startling or new (that has been published anyway!  I haven't crept into the Russian archives, of course!)---but I always enjoy a new perspective if it is written with some style and wit.

Someone tell me if this is worth a look!  Thanks!

Hi tea_rose,

I have this book in my collection. I can recommend this book highly. It is well written, and reads better than many stiff books on Russian history. He writes in a warm personal style. The photographs are old, but this is not relevant. The book concludes with Nikolai's abdication.

If you do buy a copy I woud be surprised if you will not enjoy it as well!  :D

Hi Belochka: I succumbed and ordered a copy! I think I will like it based on your comments.  I am very fond of social history-so I hope there is a good bit of personal commentary and character analysis.

It seems that I could dance my way easily into book bankruptcy! (I did find a copy in good condition for $10.00 so that wasn't too bad. There aren't too many for sale at the usual venues. The one on E-bay's covers were loosening and I wanted a tight copy)

Hi tea_rose,

I do hope that you will enjoy it as much as I do. It always comes in handy as a charmingly different reference for me.

Forget the book bankruptcy, I'm past the point of return.  ;) I must have them all (well almost)!

Let me know what your impressions are.

Enjoy  ;D

Thanks for the recommedation of this book. The university library has it, and I entertained the thought of borrowing it for some light reading to counter the reading I do for class.

Thanks, I'll pick it up Monday
