Not only an affair but a child too. That is why I liked Thyra so much as she was very honest and loyal. To Thyra's credit, when Ernst August needed her as she chose to be with him even though it must pained her to miss any of the yearly family reunions in Denmark.

Well, of course, it's obvious by the title of the thread!  And by an affair I meant the daughter, too.

Thyra was a very sweet woman and many men liked her even though she wasn't exactly a beauty (like Alexandra) or brilliant (like Dagmar). When Ernst August fell in love with her, she insisted on telling him the whole story so he could back out if he wanted. To Ernst August's benefit he did not bat an eye and still wanted to marry her.

Not to take anything away from EA because that was very ahead of his time and they do seem to have been happy with each other, but he wasn't exactly in a great bargaining position. His family had lost its influence after the war, a good chunk of its fortune (though they were still well off) and marrying into the family could've presented diplomatic problems with the ever-strengthening Prussia. Plus, he wasn't exactly a looker! Thyra might not have been on the level of Alexandra but she was still more pleasing than many princesses of her day and came with great connections.

You mean Louise of Hesse-Cassel, not her daughter-in-law Sessan, I suppose. (Did the latter even know, do you think?) But she was already dead when Marie Kathrine Jørgensen married Frode Pløyen-Holstein and moved to Tangegård.
