Young Nicholas
« on: May 31, 2009, 09:29:14 PM »
I am writing a report on Nicholas as a young man. It seems to me that we know more about him when he is older but not a lot about his younger years. I anyone one knows a book or has photos or any information it would be most appreciated.

Thank You

For  photographs, you could try looking through the  photo threads -- I 'm sure several would be posted there. For  books, you can try the classic  Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie, The Last Tsar by Edvard Radzinsky or The Romanovs: Love, Power & Tragedy,  just to name a few..

In the book "Nicholas II" by Henri Troyat there is an entire long chapter dedicated to the younger years of the last Tsar, but I don't know if there is an English version of this book (I have it in Italian).

I have posted this photo in "Nicholas II photos #3"...

Just about every book on the Imperial Family contains some information on Nicholas as Tsarevich.  You may have to do a lot of digging to get the nuggets you are looking for.

We have a great section called "Book Finder" on the front pages of the Alexander Palace Time Machine web page.

We also have a Books about the Imperial Family thread.  The books thread itself is a good place to look for book titles.

Books on those Nicholas interacted with are also good places to look, such a books on his mother and father and on his sisters and by his sister's biographers.

I just ordered Imperial Dancer by Corine Hall and Dancing in St Petersburg by Mathilde Kschessinska which will undoubtedly have information on Nicholas when he was tsarevich as both books are about Mathilde Kschessinska who was Nicholas's mistress in his Army days.

You may find some good bits in Andrei Maylunas' and Sergei Mironenko's "A Lifelong Passion."  This entire book is written using only first-hand accounts from memoirs, letters and journals.

I am really looking for details. I know the basic life that he led but I need to know what type of person he was growing up. Did he change any or stay the same.

You may have a hard time finding what you are looking for.  I don't recall ever seeing any books that concentrate on Nicholas as Tsarevich for the whole book.

Because in Nicholas's youth, his father, Alexander III was on the throne, most books covering that period cover Alexander.

But you might try some books on Alexander III and even on Alexander II that might have more information on young Nicholas as he was born when Alexander II was on the throne.

You might try The Shadow of the Winter Palace  by Edward Crankshaw, although he thinks that Nicholas was a "negative".

Another that might be harder to get is Mother Dear by Poliakoff which is a biography of Empress Marie Feodorovna, but covers the birth of all of her children.

You have undertaken an interesting but very complicated job.  Most authors concentrate on Nicholas and Alexandra and the fall of the empire.

There is also Edvard Radzinski's  The Last Tsar - The Life and Death of Nicholas II  but you have to wary of Radzinski as some of his sources are suspect.

Nicholas was born and remained a Grand Duke.  Even his coronation titles included  Grand Duke. He was created heir , that title, in theory could come & go at the will of his father.
